Brasileirao: hardest national championship on Earth kicks off

Friday, 11 May 07, 11:10 PM

This Saturday the National Brazilian League, Brasileirão, kicks off.

Of course our best players are in Europe.

Certainly our managers suck.

Definitely our fans are not really well treated.

But nowhere else in the world a championship is so difficult to win.

2007 Brasileirão, like every year, starts with, at least, 12 teams with real chances to win it.

I am not talking surprising results. I am talking about major and favorite teams.

It is not by accident that in 37 years in the so called Brasileirão, 17 teams were already Champions.

The greatest winner, Flamengo, have only 5 titles, the same number Real Madrid can have in a single decade in the Spanish League.

In 2007, including the polemic title of Sport Recife in 1987, 14 of the 20 clubs in first division already won a title.

Brasileirão is always unpredictable. There are no Liverpool/Manuted/Arsenal/Chelsea. There are no Real Madrid/Barcelona. There are no Milan/Inter/Juve. No Boca/River domination!

By the way, the Brasileirão will be played by the following teams:

América-RN
Atlético-MG - 1 title
Atlético-PR - 1 title
Botafogo - 1 title
Corinthians - 4 titles
Cruzeiro - 1 title
Figueirense
Flamengo - 5 titles
Fluminense - 1 title
Grêmio - 2 titles
Internacional - 3 titles
Juventude
Náutico
Palmeiras - 4 titles
Paraná
Santos - 2 titles
São Paulo - 4 titles (defending champion)
Sport - 1 title (recognized by CBF, but polemic)
Vasco - 4 titles

Four last places are relegated to Serie B, top four plays 2008 Libertadores.

Teams play all against each other both home and away.

you brazilians think you're all the best footballers in the world. if your championship was that good, all the best players in the world would be coming there.

I don't think thats what hes saying debaser, just that it's the hardest - the quality might not be better, but there's more competition.

this is a good thing, you don't know who can win...or at least, we are sure that 16-17 teams cannot win it.
Then, I like the fact that a team called Juventude has never won :-)

For debaser
We don't think that, we have sure.
Nobody come to Brazil because of the money, and not because of the champioship, or you don't know that Real (Brazillian money) has less value than dollar or euro? Money speaks first in everywhere.
And how many times we won Fifa World Cup? Sorry...
ok...

The best players are not here, you don't read the post?
Did you know that SC Internacional won the World Club Championship 2006 in Japan against Barcelona? You know Barcelona? Ronaldinho Gaucho and Messi team?
And did you know that SC Internacional was not the champion in Brazillian Championship in 2006? So, was not the best team here and still beat Barcelona team. Who is the best?
You are lucky that temas here are not full of money like the teams in Europe, if they were all the players would be playing here.
(sorry my english, i'm just brazillian)

Debaser, you don't understand anything about soccer. Probably, you are that kind of guy who think that only money can make winners...sorry, but in you in Europe should first start winning against brazilian teams in Fifa World Club Championship...and don't tell me you don't care. Last time Real Madrid won the tournament, there was a huge party in Madri's streets...since it was created, only Brazilians teams won: Corinthians (2000), Sao Paulo (2005) and Internacional (2006).

Another thing, dear Debaser. We brazilians don't think we are the best footballers in the world. We are really sure about it, ok? Just take a look to World Cups and all teams in Europe. There are brazilians everywhere...

I so agree with Bittenca.

And debaser, our team are the best! Our players are the best! We have cups, mate and we didnt win the last Cup too because we had a coach called Parreira, that didnt help too much!

And Brazilian Championship is probably the most difficult championship of world, for sure. At leats it's the most exciting one! Mainly this year that almost all teams have chance to win!!! WOW

Plus, there Plenty of brazilian players in the international championships....if we are not good why are they all playing around the world? By the way, while they are playing outside we are discovering a bunch of other good ones here at Brasilei~rão every year. Just have a look ; O)

I'm brazilian and when i read the article's title i thougt: Mautex is made, made, made... but after reading the text i understood his point. And i agree. We don't have here the best players of the world, they're in Europe, but, even without Ronaldo, Kaka, Robinho or Ronaldinho, our championiship is the hardest. When it starts we, like he Remembered, don't know what teams WILL won. We have the favorites, but they are always 10 or 12. it's complicated to say who will win next sunday in the match between Juventude x Corinthians. In Spain when Real or barcelona lost it's a big surprise. Cause theese clubs are in a higher level, but here the thins don't works this way.

Hey debaser, we really have a striker with 40 years old scoring gols. But I think it's better than live in a country wich all the strikes take 40 years to score once like him.

But Mautex told you a wrong history about our Championship from 87. The genuine winner was Sport Club Recife. And Falamengo, who didn´t do what was in the deal among the clubs, CBF and our press want to caugth the title, but CBF, ONMENBOL and FIFA alrealdy spoke about te case and declared that Sport is the true winner!

Im excited about this tournament. to all the Brazil Bashers, (im not Brazilian or a supporter but) you have to recognize that every big club in the world has at least on star brazilian on the team. The article however doesnt say anything about them being better. It simply says that there are so many teams that are contenders for the cup that it is the most competitive in respect to eachother. they lack the dominance of 2 to 4 teams who win every year.

The Brazilian football shows us a competition that will never happen in other countries. That ocurres because of the dimension of our country: our states are bigger than most of the countries in Europe, for an example.

In history of our Tournaments, the State Competition was more important even than the National Competition. Since 70's it changed, and the result is a lot of State Big Teams trying to win the National Championship.

That's why we have 14 teams that had won it. That's why we don't have a hegemonic team, like Barcelona or Real Madrid, in Spain, or Man. Utd. in England. And that's why we have de most competitive championship in the world.

Face it.

For me, the difference between Brasileirao and other national championships is in the balance. And that's the reason I think Mautex wrote that Brasileirao is the hardest national championship on Earth. He didn't say that brazilian teams are better than European teams, or anything like that. The point is that a lot of teams are at the same level. In Europe the situation is a little bit different, fewer teams dominate the championships...
But let me be a Brazilian devil's advocate here... could possibly one of the main reasons why so many different teams are brazilian champions be the great instability of Brasileirao's rules? Another reason: no Brazilian team can keep the same players for two seasons in a row. If you have a good lineup this year, you can be sure that next year at least half of the players will be out, sold to European teams, and you will have to make a whole new team.

Hey LucasDL i think you need help making jokes because that one was crap.

hey nobody is saying brazilians arenot some of the best players in the world, you have to be stupid (like Bittenca) to say that kaka ronalidnho, ronaldo are not great, but look those guys barely even played in brazil, so you can't even say that there are really good players in the brasileiro. kaka left at 20, ronaldinho about 21 and ronaldo? 16? 17?

lets face it each brazilian team has one or two talented young players and everybody else is just average or little above or below, and these youngsters will go to europe soon. like alexandre pato. you talk about internacional beating barcelona, i think iarley got best player of the tournament and he is garbage. and last year who was the best player of the brazilian championship? mineiro, and he is playing for hertha berlin. oh how great.

and brazilian championship might be hard, but competition without quality is nothing. im sure the championships in albania and mozambique and sri lanka are all very difficult also, but wheres the quality.

oh, and have you watched the english first division? 24 teams who play 46 games, and they play in the sun, the heat, the cold, the rain the snow, on freezing pitches sometimes, hard committed football. and there are 6 new teams every year in this division, so never any favourites. this is the hardest division to play in.

also brazil (i think joined with india) is the most corrupt country in the world, and i remember Pele carried out an investigation and exposed so much corruption in brazilian football, so how can you say the competition is so good in the brazilian championship when the game is so corrupt.

Bittenca, as much as you might get irritated, please refrain from abusing your fellow community members. I understand that you might be getting frustrated, but there's no need to use that kind of language, especially since he hasn't been abusive towards you.

And debaser, you might want to adopt a slightly more respectful tone towards the others, because - sorry to say - you seem to be getting on a lot of people's nerves.

Hey, that's not a brazilian referee's attitude! It should be red card and then call the police to enter the field and put everybody to run! You're acting more like english referees, first a little chat and than maybe a yellow card... Anyway, I like the second more...
