Eto'o On The Way Out

Saturday 19th July by fcbnews_nic · 20 Comments

Just a quick post this morning as I try to combine my blogging with my busy social schedule here in London. The Spanish papers are saying that Barça and Samuel Eto'o are working on finding a move for the player. What is most surprising is the destinations that are being touted. That Eto'o could end up moving to Uzbekistan sounds so unreal that I wonder if there may be some sort of elaborate joke going on. But reports say that the player has been out there for talks. Another possible destination could be Tottenhm who look likely to lose both Dimitar Berbatov and Robbie Keane in the near future, but this would see Eto'o at a club who are not in the Champions League. Where are the bids from the big teams? Surely Eto'o should be hot property and I would have suspected some interest from the Chelseas and Arsenals and Juventeses of this world. According to El Mundo Deportivo Didier Drogba could still be in line as Eto'o's replacement, and while he may be getting on a bit I would certainly prefer him to Adebayor. However, I wouldn't be surprised now if Barça don't sign anyone and stick with Henry and Bojan as centre-forwards for the coming season. After all the pair of them should still offer us pl;enty of goals between them. Anyway, thanks for some of the technical advice on using the Mac, you'll notice I have at least found the ç now. On Monday I'll be back in sunny Barcelona and normal service will be resumed. Today in London looks like there may be a bit of sun about. I'm off to a picnic so expect it to start raining as soon as I get there.

Hello Nic,
I was also following the rumours of eto being linked to some Uzbek club. This is bad for the player. I also saw somewhere that Chelsea has rejected a swap between drogba and eto. Whatever I still believe we need a Quality pure centre forward in Barcelona. Bojan is too young and Henry, I am not predicting anything about him.

Would love him at Spurs. He may be overrated, but he's good, will score goals and sell shirts. We need a massive signing to pick the club up from the loss of Berbatov and Keane, and Eto'o could be the man. Not much else available. Huntelaar, Villa wont come. Milito, Garcia are risks and Santa Cruz is not a big enoughname, but i'd take him.

From what I heard Eto'o was in Uzbeck to give a masterclass in football as some sort of promotional agreement with the Uzbeck club and Barcelona. Iniesta, Xavi and Puyol are also flying out in a few days to do some sort of promotion as well. I think the club made an audacious bid for Eto'o but I dont think there is anything to it. He said he would consider it with all the other offers but I think that is as far as it will go. I would like Eto'o to stay, I think he still has a lot to give and even though he has lost a bit of his lightning pace, he still scores like crazy. Best goals per minute ratio in the league last season, and thats while struggling for fitness and on a team not at its best.

I dont like Drogba, he has the touch of a rapist and he dives like a little girl, his attitude is all wrong as well. IF we are going to go for that type of player then Ade is a better option, at least he is young and still has time to improve. He will only get better, Drogba meanwhile will only begin to decline from this stage on in his career.

As for the weather in London Nic, you are lucky you got a bit of sun while you are here!! It has been a miserable summer!

I still can't decide if I like the Romario to Monaco rumor or the Eto'o to Uzbekistan rumor more...

id prefer berbatov as a replacement
but i do agree we need more forwards
messi, henry, bojan and hleb if he plays on the left wing
dats considering eto'o leaves and iniesta plays in the midfield
so we'd need more wide players or support striker, where berba comes in
or we could promote some barca atletic players
victor vasquez anyone?

My ideal situation is Eto'o signs on elsewhere and we get Arshavin. I like where Eto'o's heart is, but it's that he's so opinionated that makes him a potential disruptive element in the dressing room. Also, it could be that FCB aren't getting any offers for Eto'o because everyone is wondering if his knee's going to hold out for much longer, Ever since that injury against Werder Bremen in the CL, the Cameroon's edge has dulled a little. The other thing is Eto'o doesn't seem to do well in the more classic central forward target role. Get a rough and tumble organized defense in front of Eto'o and he gets silenced fairly easily. I think that Pep is headed for a little more of the 'fast break' than Frankie was. Sure, tiki taka, but with that tendency for pouncing on the counterattack. Hence, my attraction for Arshavin. The Russian is a lightning bolt in that regard.

That Eto'o would even be interested in Uzbekistan is just ... weird. Can't comment on that since it basically makes no sense. But there's still until 31 August to find another club for Eto'o. Personally, I don't think he wants to leave, but he must realize that his star isn't shining as brightly any longer in Barcelona. Decisions, decisions.

The man we have to get rid of as soon as possible is Laporta, to be followed shortly by Begiristain e tutti gli altri. Let me put you straight: we won't find a better striker than Eto'o . The only reason Laporta & Co. want him out of the club is because of the money they will get from the deal. When I say "they" I mean THEY, not FC Barcelona (they always get a commission, when they sell and also when they buy... didn't you know that?) You know how much Laporta earns as Barça president? NOTHING!!! (well, officially, of course!). And he is a no-good, bottom-of-the-barrel lawyer! Whatever happens he knows he won't be in the club for a long time, and that's the reason why he sold Ronaldinho, Deco... now wants to sell Eto'o.
To RJ1882: Eto'o is not overrated. If he joins Spurs he'll probably score more goals than Torres did for Liverpool last year. He could become a LEGEND at White Heart Lane, I'm sure about that. So, if the deal gets done, congratulations. You don't deserve to be lagging behind Chelsea and the likes.

It is hard for Eto and Henry to play on the same team i think it would affect the team chemistry, but who would be better to leave Henry or Eto? I don't think they are going to tell Henry to leave being he just came last season, so most likely Eto will go as we are hearing in all these rumours. But i do agree Laporta mess up Barca

i dont see how they can even consider losing etoo without a replacement in line. are they seriously goign to leave the majority of scoring to bojan and henry??? if so then i suspect we are doomed. how can u put all that on bojan who despite all his talent isnt going to smack 25-30 goals in, and despite what many of u think his size and lack of strength is going to hurt him big time. and then we are going to leave it up to henry. that is risky to put it lightly. ppl here know my stance on that clown. messi scores but can we count on his fitness. we better keep etoo. if he wants to stay then i dont see any reason to let such a great and young player go.

adebayor is too pricey, so thats out. and drogba, come on, why are we buying 30 yrs old declining stars. he will give u 2 more yrs max. plus despite him being very good in my opinion, his diving makes me sick.

i do feel bad for arshavin though. saw him holding a barca shirt yesterday. shitty how his club has out priced him. in either case he is not replacement as a forward anyhow. and seeing that he and hleb are very similar i doubt he will come now.

What is Barcelona doing? Or is it what have they done?

First was Deco, Ronaldinho now Eto'o?

Mr. Laporta, do you expect Bojan to carry the load of Barcelonas goals? He is only 17?.. Meanwhile Henry is past his prime, and you want him instead of Eto'o? Are you mad?

I can't understand some of these decisions.. Eto'o is only 27/28 still one of the best strikers in the world, you let him go and you'll never find a replacement capable of doing what he does.

If Deco, Ronaldinho and Eto'o (if he leaves) have stellar seasons with their new clubs, please Mr. Laporta.. don't say we didn't tell you so.

I want Barca to win La Liga this year, but right now I dont have a good feeling about it.

I agree that Laporta has been causing Barca chaos, but i also believe that Barca was missing something for these two past season, you may say wining La Liga is not all but comming third is also bad and maybe if action is not been taken they could even drop to fifth so i strongly believe something needs to be done, and i wonder to myself has anyone of us know what is the right thing to do to be back on top? players were on the field and if they had perform well Barca would haved finished better, but the fact is they didn't so i guess some players would have to leave and some stay. But who should leave and who should stay does anyone knows?

Eto'o is still good for Barca and he want to stay. Beside, he's only 27 years old. why should we replace him for an older striker-Drogba??

@Barca4lyf

Torres gave Spain THE GOAl but he is totally overrated as a striker. Samuel is not his equal, please get your facts right. He is lazy on and off the ball. He does not have the killer instinct of great strikers (Jean Pierre Papin, Marco van Basten, Henry at Arsenal, etc...etc...). He is absolutely not Etoo. That comparison is a false choice. As for Villa...maybe you have something there!!!

@Rafael
I see your point Rafa but I do think that you're missing the bigger point here. For the past few years we've looked for "A PLAYER" to carry the team and he's been nowhere to be found. We though Ronnie could still win us temporadas alone and it didn't happen, then we banked on Messi and it didn't happen;then we brought in Henry and that didn't work either; then we asked Bojan to grow up to soon well he showed us that he still had a lot to learn (i.e. last year a throw out of the back from Valdes to him against Villareal or Valencia(I believe) at the Camp Nou showed the world his youth and lack of experience);then we decided to pin all our problems on Laporta when we should have been talking about Frank and still that didn't work...what are we doing wrong?
We are not playing "Total Football" and we've bought into the cult of player idolatry. First, "In Total Football, a player who moves out of his position is replaced by another from his team, thus retaining the team's intended organizational structure. In this fluid system, no player is fixed in his nominal role; anyone can be successively an attacker, a midfielder and a defender.
Total Football's tactical success depends largely on the adaptability of each footballer within the team, in particular their ability to quickly change positions depending on the situation. The theory requires players to be comfortable in multiple positions, hence it puts high technical and physical demands on them". We were not fit mentally or physically and that responsibility solely rested on Frank , his staff and the players not Laporta. Spain won the EuroCup this year by using many of the said principles of this system. Can anyone name the star of the Spanish National team this year? there wasn't just one! as evidenced by the agony the committee had in selecting a Most Valuable Player.We had many stars because the team was fluid and non stationnary. Herein lies the point, we simply need a good position player!!!
