Arshavin Medical CANCELLED

Colonel Stok: I wish to defect, but there are conditions.
Harry Palmer: What do you want?
Colonel Stok: I want colonel's pay for life.
Harry Palmer: Don't we all.

In the good old days, one simply got on the trumpet to the Home Office and once a few dozen forms had been completed and countersigned, they'd send Harry Palmer out to defect you.

In this modern age of football agents and multiple football agents - the world of double agents seems actually more straightforward.

Anyway, Archibald on Spurs Odious was confident as hell that there would be a medical today for old Smoothbum. Alas, not to be. The cynic in me says this was never on the cards anyway. No disrespect to the tipster named after Aberdeen's finest, but disinformation and cobblers various has crippled even the best sources this season. And Archibald has already called medicals for Dunne and Ferdinand that never happened. As I say, this isn't a dig, more symptomatic of the current climate.

My guess is that the stumbling blocks are numerous. The player is probably at the absolute height of his stock value and if my discussions with 'an agent' were anything to go by then Levy will be near his wits end. The mess of unscrupulous financial shenanigans and backhanders will bring this transfer to nothing.

The player wants to come to the West and grow roses. Unfortunately, his destiny is very much in the hands of men who's ambitions all include the phrase 'early retirement for me.'

Don't see how he would complement Benty or Dos Santos anyway. Keep hold of Berbs! Arshavin is hardly a target man is he?

zenit's club comments this afternoon suggest a deal will be concluded.....apparently they quoted £19m to begin with though will meet spurs in middle at their offer of £14m. so £16m?

not sure why we are not looking at a centre back, perhaps there is little out there for us.

Hardly surprising news HH

I have always had the feeling they have seen AA as a cash cow. All trying to put various fingers in the Arshavin pie so to speak, in order to all get as you say "retirement money".

I maintained all along that his transfer could see us getting ripped off. At £15m the price is right (just about) anything above that seems exorbidant, especially at the £24m Zenit are reported to have wanted initially. I very much doubt that Daniel Levy will want to get hismelf embroiled in the world of half truths and double talk that seems yto have surrounded Mr Arshavin.

Strangely, the person I feel sorry for in all of this is Arshavin. He wants to leave Russia to better his carreer, experience another style of football and yes earn himself some good cash. But ultimately the merky world around him have driven his price up to ensure they all get in on the act, meaning Mr Smoothbum will never get his wish.

Personally (after watching pre season friendlies) think that Bent should be the first name on the sheet. As for Arshavin, (not tested yet in a top class leauge) there's a gamble for ya. Could be another Rebrov. I say sell Berb because he dont want to be there anyway! Then use all that lolly to get Villa. Im convinced that this will be the one we finally beat the scum. COME ON YOU LILLY WHITES !!!!!! ;)

Agree we need more defensively as we look quite good going forward.
Graham Roberts mentioned on talksport the other day that we were interested in another CB and Veloso the Sporting Lisbon DM - don't know if there is any truth to this but this is where I'd be spending my money as we look no better at the back than last year and that is a worrying sign if we truly want to move forward as a club.

I agree his price is inflated by those wanting to make a quick buck. But we do need another option up front. I dont think JR will let Berbasulk go until we have a replacement but on his last two showings I for one will be glad to see him go as he obviously doesn't want to wear our shirt.
Well done the boys at the weekend

Press the shift key and the number 3 key at the same time! lol

If we end up paying the £19.8m that Zenit want I feel we'll be paying way over the odds. Surely for that kind of money there is better options out there. Quaresma at Porto, Simao at Benfica, even if we went a little higher and bought Silva in from Valencia it would be a better deal.

IMO I would like to see us get Veloso and bring in another striker like Fred at Lyon or go back in for Milito at Zaragoza.

Gunter can play at CB (where he has impressed for Wales) and I'm sure will be one option as CB back up. Would still like to see a an experienced CB come in to take Dawsons place.

Don't know why if Fergie is so desperate to land Bebatov we say yeah you can have him but we want Anderson or Hargreaves as part of the deal.Get rid of a player who apparentley does not want to be there and also landing a DM who are going to be better than Zokora.

Dawson just seems to make to many simple mistakes. Everytime the ball came towards him when he was marking a striker yesterday i expected him to misjudge the bounce or flight of the ball before watching the striker walk past him as he stumbled. That and the fact he seems to be the only player in the side who still likes hoofing long balls up the pitch. If we are to capitalise on Bent's running and movement we need balls slid down the outside of the CB's or round the back of the defence. Not long straight balls that will be headed straight back at us.

He's a replacement for Keane. If we sell Berbatov, then we'll replace like for like. ie Santa Cruz or Huntelaar

I agree we need someone like Veloso more urgently. I hope that deal goes down and I hope its soon.
The Roma game will show the cracks in our back, that haven't been as obvious in the rest of the preseason friendlies -- which have not really threatened in our half yet.

Arshavin is definately worth 19m in my opinion!
Just get the deal done for f*cks sake!
there is more dead wood still to get rid of, boateng, kaboul, Lee young po, Ghaaly (about 15m total to come in)
We should then buy Veloso who can play CM or CB! solving dm and central defensive cover.
keep berbatov also at all costs, he cannot be blind to the way we are playing and the exciting new faces and new system. he must realise we can do it this season!:D

***i realise if berb does leave villa is a good replacemant, but if it comes down to a straight choice I think we would be better off keeping him if we can. In our talented but short attack inc midfield. Berbatov has some height where as villa wouldnt give us that dimension.

HH,

“Tottenham offered us €20m (£15.8m) for Andrei, but that does not work for us. We are waiting for a new proposal,” said Konstantin Sarsaniya, Zenit’s sporting director.

“Initially we announced that negotiations will start at around €25m (£19.8m). What the final transfer fee will be in the end is hard to say.”

To me this suggests a possible agreement is still on. so far we have had mostly arshavin's agent telling us about a deal, but he's an agent so we all dismiss this as rubbish. but now zenit are talking about a large difference, when in fact the difference is not large at all.

they have not categorically denied any move. spurs have not rubbished this either.

i think we will be seeing the signing complete this week.

just a gut feeling.....no inside source via levy's tea lady.

Mike - Good shout with the Santa Cruz / Huntelaar shout. Santa Cruz is injured now no? And Blackburn would probably not want to sell another one of their key players to us. Huntelaar would be sterling but may want CL football.

Matt - Berba is gone. His mind is elsewhere and his attitude stinks. Bent deserves to start against Roma and Boro as he has put in the hard yards over the summer.
We now have 7 subs at our disposal in order for the PL to come into line with other european leagues.

Veloso would be excellent. As too would be Villa.

I would rather pay £30m for someone like Villa than pay £19m for Arshavin.

The boy defends with the badge on his heart. I agree he makes some poor decisions but that can be put right. I also think he needs somebody whos expirienced and controling next to him. But he hadnt an expirienced CB for nearly all last season Kaboul, Zakora, Hud, I think Teemu was back there. Im just saying there's definately potential to be very good. In any case at least he doesnt want an "arm round his shoulder" like that twat Kaboul.

i'd just like to say to harry that this a top notch site! i've bin a spurs fan since i could pull on some boots and a shirt and love the club till the day i'm pushing daisys, with the arshavin transfer we could have got him last year for around 10 to 12 players who command that money do so for a reason coz he is shit hot, however the market vale of players goes up after a championship zokora anybody??never mind the likes of diouf e.t.c we have made some astute signings and even after the sale of robbie i think ther could be more in the pipeline but i'm sick of reading this and that and want us to play with players who want to play with the proud cockerill emblazoned across there heart. we've got a good squad, better than we've had for years but we maybe need another striker but if berba stays i want him to stay because he wants to not because he's forced to and if he were to go then bring in some quality, arshavin certainly fits in there but we can't be held to ransom after a good showin in the championships although form prior to that suggests he'd be a great signing. having watched my beloved spurs pre season and i know its easy to say we look good and benty needs a chance u don't fork out 16-5 mill on a player who is shit or turned shit over night, at 24 he's hungry and ready to prove his worth given a chance, us yids can be a fickle lot jol out? the bloke woz the sort of bloke u'd have proud to run your team straight down the line i loved him but to be fair we've stepped up a gear again and i belive this season could be 1 to remember, give benty a shot i'd av him instead of berba at the moment for predatory instincts the way we've bin playin and if berba stays amazin, but we can't afford to have players who don't want to play for us and their hearts elsewhere equally we can't be bent over a barrel by people who are charging 10 mill 2 much to get an early retirement, we're goin places i've got my money on spurs winning another trophy, break the bank villa anyone?

i think we should pay the 19m for arshavin now, as we definately know he wants to come to us and seeing him play for russia and on youtube, it's plain to see he's shi1t hot!
i think pay the 30m for villa only if berbatov goes! (but we still dont know if villa even wants to come to us!) so i wouldnt risk letting the arshavin deal fall through because were waiting for villa, get this bit of business done asap i would hate us to miss out on both.
scum are after veloso, but knowing them tight arses they wont go above 14m if that! he is the final piece in the jigsaw for this seasons assault as he is a high quality DM/DC. we can also generate money for him from the rest of the dead wood we have. (kaboul, Boateng, Ghaaly, Lee YP.) not that we need to.

Continuing on the Harry Palmer analogy, I've read that Arshavin is a a bit of a bod. I read he has a Degree in Fashion design. Must have a "Million Dollar Brain" ;)

Seriously though, £20 million for an unproven 27 year old in the premier league is silly money. I can quite understand why Levy doesn't want to pay that much. The risk is too high.

Sorry guys but the idea that we would sign Arshavin was a moot point anyway. Apparently he wants £135 000 a week which i believe slightly breaks our wage structure. Spurs pulled out of this deal about 20 minutes after we were granted permission to speak to him(2+weeks ago). This guy keeps dropping you in the shit Harry, Id ignore him from now on.
