Rafa To Sign Lambert, Butler, Benson And The Boy Hedges

Spurs fans went into meltdown as our transfer window seemingly had a brick thrown through it today.

The morning started off alright. What the Met Office might describe as dull with wet patches. Everybody hanging about, twitching at the net curtains, waiting to see if a Bentley was pulling up outside. The wet patches largely due to the Spanish organ Marca running an unsubstantiated allegation that we had bought someone called Luis Garcia from Espanyol.

Then, just as the cutting and pasting of this article across Europe reached fever pitch... All hell broke loose. Those who were previously over the moon were suddenly as sick as parrots. Three hundred and twenty seven versions of the headline, 'Rafa Keane On Robbie' wizzzed across the www.

Fortunately, the boy Harold happened to slip into a pair of Untwistable Knickers™ before breakfasting extensively this morning and is able to provide a translation of this afternoon's angst.

Rafa: "We know Villa is a very good player, we know the price and we know the players we have, so when you consider everything we decided he was one of the names, but at this moment, not our target. "

Translation:"Valencia have laughed us off."

Rafa:"Keane is one of the other names and okay we are still working with other names. We were in contact and we will see now."

Translated: I still have a fag packet with some names on in my car-coat pocket. Either way, I am happy with 20 Players."

I'm not going to get bogged down in the supposed 'legalities' of what some chubby chinned castanet carrying car-coated Barry has done. But I will point out the obvious. This smacks of desperation.

If Levy had said, " That sounds great, Rafa. Let me just check with our cash office that nine million in cash, nine on a Mastercard and two in Giros is agreeable." this statement would have never have gone out.

These are the words of a man whistling in the dark. Bob may well wish to fulfil his childhood dream and shout 'Dalglish!' as he scores in front of the Kop. Benitez may well want to ship him in. But those two ambitions are approximately twenty million quid apart form each other.

So what does this Garcia chap do that Juande would like him in his squad because he is not a prolific goal scorer or in the Spain squad. He certaintly does not sound a worthy replacemnet for Keano, but I have a sneaky feeling the Keane transfer will go ahead if the cash is availble. Keane has not come out saying anyhting to put it to bed.

well put Harold!!!

Keep those hub cap stealing, theiving scouser sombrero wearing, shell suited, giro collecting barry's away from our number 1 striker.

It would be a serious blow if he were to leave.

Come on lads, I love Keano as much as anyone but could you really in all honesty turn down the club you supported as a boy in favour of being "loyal" and staying at the Lane? I personally could as I love Tottenham but you have to look at it from a professional and a personal point of view. I love Robbie Keane, I would take 1 Robbie Keane over 10 Berbatovs but if playing for Liverpool is his dream, who are we to deny him that? He's given us 6 wonderfull years at Spurs and I pray he stays for another 6 but at the end of the day, if he comes out and says he really has his heart set on a move to Liverpool, we should not stand in his way and take £20m odd from Liverpool and use it to invest in a decent defensive midfielder ie; Veloso. We already have Tomas Pekhart sitting there ready to jump in and be our new top scorer and who knows, maybe letting our talisman leave would turn out to be a blessing? We've seen it happen before ie at the scum when Henry left and Scabregas took his place, he became the world class player everyone knew he was and it has made his career and made him arguably move valuble than Henry was

I don't believe either Keane or Beratov are off.
Likewise, I don't know who is coming in - no one even heard about Modric until he was actually signed; There seems to be an enormous amount of press speculation with very little actually happening...

spot on Harry. I assume Rafa thinks that if he unsettles the player publicly then he will get him on the cheap. Not sure why he would think this as it seems to me that Villa added a few million to Barry's price as Rafa pissed them off.

I think it's hard for any of us to comment who should stay or go! None of us have a clue what Ramos is thinking at the moment! Do any of us actually know where Santos is going to play? Midfield / Striker? I'd hate to see Keane leave, as many of us have said before in Ramos we trust (God I hope I'm right!!!)

£20m for Keano? I think we should hold out for a lot more. If Liverpool are reportedly ready to pay £17m for Barry + Finnan going the other way, what does that make Keane worth? I hope he doesn't leave and I don't think he will if Berba stays.

Benitez shouldn't be allowed to say that he would like to sign Keane. That's not really any different from what Real Madrid are doing over Ronaldo. How come they are getting stick from the press & Liverpool / Benitez isn't? It's the Spurs hating press again.

Don't know that much about Garcia to comment, but Pekhart, as well as he has performed in the ressies, is not ready to step in and play a full part this season. Maybe he'll be used as 4th striker?

I'd rip Rafa's arm off for 20million for Keane. He's been a great servant to the club but I don't for a minute doubt that there are much better strikers we could have in our team. 24 odd goals this season - but how many were gifted to him? How many one on ones did he miss? I hate seeing Robbie in a one on one - you just know he'll miss and then start running around looking for the ref to plead with as if he'd been shot on the way through. If you give me 6043 shots on goal I'll surely put in 24 too.

Calm down, calm down...

HH, I feel your assessment of Liverpool's/Benitez's position is spot on, and for once the BBC appear to be in agreement:

"Former Sevilla manager Ramos knows Garcia well from his time in La Liga, and has long admired the player's ability to create as well as score goals. But the forward's arrival is not dependent on Berbatov or Keane leaving the club, although Spurs are aware of the interest in both players from several clubs. One of the clubs interested is Liverpool, and manager Rafael Benitez confirmed on the club website: "Keane is one we're looking at. We were in contact and we will see now." However, BBC Sport understands, despite reports to the contrary, that Keane has not asked for a transfer and that Spurs are likely to price the Reds out of a bid."

And hurrah to that. Keane's loss would be a disaster, he brings far 'more to the table' than just his playing ability - or pointing and shouting.

And anyway, lest we forget the player's actual words of 29 May 08: "I'm very content with my life and my time at Spurs. I want to play there as long as I'm happy and as long as I'm wanted. Over the last three of four years there has always been speculation that I'm going here, there and everywhere... I'm having a summer off without people ringing saying 'Are you going here, are you going there?' I'm looking fowrad to a nice break and then going back to Spurs next season."

It's all well and good Robbie wanting to play for the scousers, but does he not realise he'll be nothing more than a rotation player, who's shelf-life will be that of one or two seasons?

Whatever happened to Kuyt, Benayoun and Babel - good players pre-scouse, they've all fallen victim to Rafa's rotation policy. Faded into obscurity I say.

Keano, if he is serious about the switch, needs to wake up and smell the hummus.

Thanks to Debrett’s translations; davspurs to English:

"Dear Mr Brooks,

If only you knew what I know about the Liverpool players; Furthermore, if I advised Mrs Keane of the same, it is likely she would object to any proposed relocation to Merseyside. Apart from the risk of burglary whilst one is away, a misfortune that I understand recently befell Steven Gerrard, it has been brought to my attention that for the past three seasons a number of the club’s players may have been flouting anti-doping regulations. If the Spanish cunt persists in his attempts to sign Robbie Keane I will be forwarding dossier of evidence the Editor of an esteemed organ such as The Sun.”

Alright Jim,

You're off beam there my love. Lennon, Kaboul, Bent and Defoe were all just okay players before they came to Spurs and as yet none of them have routinely lived up to expectation.

Whereas.. Kyut and Babel were the darlings of Europe and Cocker's not too wide of the mark. The next stop on the way to total obscurity would be Newcastle.

And as this is a Spurs blog and Cocker is a Yid, it appears he took your 'concentrate on your own team......etc' advice BEFORE you gave it.

Now, I'm in the market for a set of alloys for an XJS...

I covered the Keane tap up when "news/tap up" subject first reared it's ugly head.

As for the supposed signing of Espanyol's Luis Garcia, I can only say he used to link up well in his play with Raul Tamudo and De La Pena and could score a bit. If you speak Spanish here's an interview. Though the T-Shirt is pretty understandable, even if the interview isn't for the vast majority. Translated the shirt says "The Mother Whoring Police". Spanish equivalent of Mother Fucking, I suppose. Though it is the German for Police. Perhaps it's a dig at the Guardia Civil.

Back to Luis Garcia though. He is a gladiator, or maybe it's his favourite film. Or something.

And davspurs, honestly that's the second rant I've read from you regarding the supposed dope Liverpool are supposedly on. I watched Fernando Torres when he played for Atletico Madrid and he's not displaying any different characteristics now, to when he was playing for them.

Don't misunderstand me, I have my own "idealistic" views on drugs. I laugh when Linford Christie fails multiple tests, his training partners fail tests, and he still becomes a coach, gets invited onto A Question of Sport etc. But "we're up" in arms about Dwain Chambers' wish to run in Beijing. Is it fair to forgive/pretend nothing happened with one and ostracize another?

The drugs thing is one thing, but regarding your opinion, I'd just prefer it if you run to The Sun and spill the beans instead of rant about it on here. If you can substansiate your claims get on with it, or don't mention it, please?
