Teemu, We Salute You

Teemu Tainio - Carling Cup Winner And Geezer.

This is a sad day for me. An old friend is saying goodbye.

It seems unlikely that Teemu Tainio will be inducted into any THFC Hall Of Fame. He didn't 'blaze' a goal scoring trail in his time at Tottenham. This eulogy must be prefaced by saying he wasn't the greatest player who ever wore Lilywhite. Hell, he wasn't even reliably a first squad pick. But nor was he a journeyman, some sort of undistinguished footballer who merely plodded a path. He will though be remembered as fondly as those who won us cups and stole our hearts with twenty five yard pin point passes.Mind you, West Ham away '06 anyone?

He'll be missed for who he was. A player who gave his all. As I barked at Berbatov, 'a man say, like Teemu Tainio, is worth ten of you in terms of what he feels he owes us, but he can only ever give us in terms of 'goals n' magic' a fifth of what you can deliver.'

We often glance fondly in the rearview mirror as Yids. Largely due to the absence of happiness to gawp at here in the now. Oh for a Stevie Perryman. What would I give to unleash a Graham Roberts right now. Not just on the other lot - but on ours.

""I've always been a Tottenham fan, so coming here is a really big deal for me."

"I used to love watching Gazza, Lineker, and I have videos of Hoddle."

Tainio was as devoutly loyal and committed as any of his notable predecessors. His ambition was clearly to wear the shirt and whilst in it give it his very upmost. Desire and passion in spades. Tottenham are crying out to win more and I maintain the belief that this will only ever be achieved when we add what men like Tainio had to what bastards like Berbatov have. Balance is the key.

Needless to say, when Keane brings Sunderland to The Lane I'll be on my feet to welcome the home one of our favourite sons.

We did as much for each other as we could in our time together  - and that's no bad way for friends to say goodbye.

Teemu is one of those players you don't miss until he's gone, a player you rarely make time to think about or give credit to.
He wont be mentioned in post match summaries and analysis, as he isn't a flair player, but look under "Honest Pro" in the dictionary and you'll see a picture of Teemu.
I never heard him complain, never saw a glimpse of any kind of childish sulking and when things didnt go his way he just got on with the job, rather than pointing and shouting at someone else.
Teemu is a man I'd have in the trenches with me, and I expect he'd be the first over the top.
Cheers Teemu, for those that took the time to know you, you will most certainly be missed at the Lane.

If he didnt have as many injuries it might have been a whole lot differrent. I would rather a fit Tainio that a fit Zokora any day. Best of luck to him.

I agree with everything you say in that article Harry. Players like Tainio are the steel that must be allied to the silk that players like Berbatov bring.

My only hope is that Steed stays at WHL. I'd be very disappointed if we lost two hardworking, honest players that gave their all for the lilywhite shirt in the space of a week.

He will be a player that those who know their Tottenham will admire for years to come. He was a Spurs fan living the dream. Yes, he was limited but he always gave his all for us.

Farewell and good luck Teemu. You'll be welcome back at the lane anytime!

Missing you already, Teemu.

Just seen the pics of him in a Sunderland shirt on their website, and guys...im telling you that there is sorrow in those eyes. We've lost a Spurs man, a Spurs Fan and a player who was truly proud to wear the shirt.

Obviously the lack of First Team football at Spurs might have frustrated Teemu, but if it did, he didnt show it.

maybe the appeal of working with Roy Keane proved too strong after meeting the guy...i dunno.

but Mr. Tainio, i'll say this.

YOU'RE SPURS AND YOU KNOW YOU ARE!

Many Many thanks.

Couldn't agree more, I think he deserves the biggest cheer when he comes back to White Hart Lane.

Nice words HH and PLN, although after reading those comments anyone would think he's dead.
Good luck Teemu.

I think BMJ once said that 'whenever Teemu plays we seem to win'. That's probably not very accurate, but you got the feelng that when players like Tainio turned out, they at least 'wanted to win'.

Here's to the second best squad player, and shame on Spurs for the selling the first in Malbranque.

LINK

I live in the north east, and for some strange reason, my Dad is a Makem, hopefully i'll be able to get to a few games with him and support Teemu (though i'll be sitting with the Yid Army when we're up there of course)

Sunderlnad fans are passionate and knowledgable, and they'll love him up there.

Teemu has found a good place to play...but The Lane will always be his home

It's will be interesting if Teemu would do a Keano if he had been as "desired" as a player. But this is not the time for fancy speculation.Like all Spurs fans...we wish you well Teemu and you are always welcome at the lane.

Good luck the fella. And this isn't meant as a slur to him as he always gave us his best. More as a reality check to everyone else: it's hard to say how loyal a player is when he's not good enough to get the big money clubs sniffing around and offering them the cash. He may have stayed out of loyalty, but seeing as no-one really wanted to prise him away without out blessing we'll never know.

I fear you are right Nomad, he'll be missed more in his absence than in any of his tenacious if essentially limited performances.
There is something to be said for the player who knows his parameters and regulates his game accordingly. The need for a selfless Tainio will be greater than ever alongside Modric, Bentley and Dos Santos.
Give me Teemu over Zokora any day.

For me Teemu's legacy will be the way he totally nullified Fabregas when he came on as sub in the 5-1 demolition derby. Who knows what would have happened if the goner had time and space on the ball. Remember it was only 1-0 at the time. Rumour has it that after the match Fabregarse went back to his house and whilst making a coffee Teemu took the teaspoon off him.

I was quite sad to see that it looks like teemu will be leaving the lane, as previously stated he really did give his all in the shirt and would play any position asked of him. I never had any doubts when I saw him in the starting 11 that he would do a job. Of all the players linked with moves out of white hart lane this season im a bit dissapointed teemu looks like he'l be the first to go. Cheers son.

I'm filling up after that article, Harry...

Teemu will be warmly welcomed back to the Lane for all the reasons you meantioned - he has heart for this club and he shames the likes of Berbatov the Impaler and Keane the Fibber. Sorry to use a word like "fibber" but I'm that cross...

I've watched Mackay and Mullery, Perryman and Pratt, Roberts and Hoddle and just hope we can unearth someone soon who has the character to impose himself on his mates out there and drive the team on.

Tainio will be missed he used to get a lot of stick from a lot of forums but he never stopped running and always gave 100% he was our unsung hero in the 5-1 win against the scum & i will also not forget him pointing to the score board & winding up Chelski in the carling cup final.

Another excellent article which only serves to endorse the fact that HH is by far the best Spurs blog on the web. It is significant that every comment thus far has been full of praise for a true gentleman of the game and I can only add my agreement that he was an absolute credit to the team, always giving 100%, never a sour word and along with Steed, in my opinion, the hardest working and most loyal guy of the bunch. He will be sadly missed and I wish him every possible success for the future. A warm welcome awaits for his every return to WHL.

I used to call him the puppetmaster in the centre of the park (bit of a joke name i know), but he used to pull the strings. He'd break up the play, and play the simple passes. Like a Makele. He never moaned about not playing, and would give 100% at RB, RM, CM, LM wherever he was played. Proper pro, and a proper player who wanted to play for our club. Jamie O Hara reminds me of him already. We need players like this at our club, whenever he played in the centre of midfield we always seemed a better team, think the Arse game, Fulham 4-0 away in the cup couple of season ago, even Reading in the cup last season at their place, he gave us balance!!!! Something we always seem to lack. Big shame letting him go, would rather we got rid of Zokora than him anyday. Good luck Teemu, you will be missed.

The squad is getting trimmed down - I think we would have been better off keeping him for at least another season and loaning out Tarrabt instead ..

Thank you Teemu. All the best in Sunderland.

Loving the teaspoon analogy!! Remember it doing the rounds at the time but completely forgot about it!! Should start a fanzine called Teemu's Teaspoon!
