There's Only One F In Fulham

Sunday, 16 November 08, 01:06 AM ยท Posted by HarryHotspur

'Arry has come out and said he wants fans who throw coins banned for life. After this game against Fulham it would be interesting to know what action he might propose against players who throw matches.

This isn't a cue for Gomes haters to form an orderly queue.

I want to push the boundaries of Blogging. Work with me. Let me see if this works. I'm going to type this really slowly. I'm telling you - Gomes is a great, great goalie. Supporting a man when he's down isn't easy. The easy route is to shout ' he's rubbish!' and demand the search for the replacement.

I try not to do blind faith. Well, beyond our badge and Eddie Rocket's Buffalo Wings anyway. The good that Gomes has done since putting on our shirt has been extraordinary. The bad has been sad but not a lamentable as some might make out.

"He's a top keeper, he's a brave keeper," Redknapp told reporters. "He doesn't hide on his line and let people head balls at his goal.

"If he thinks he can come out and deal with the situation he will do it. Everybody who has watched him over the years in Holland thinks he's a world class keeper.

"I like him, he's a character," added Redknapp. "He can go on to become a top goalkeeper in the Premier League."

Is it a trade secret that Andy Johnson is two bob? Then someone should tell Woodgate.

And is it that Gareth Bale is so determined not to move to Manchester United that his tactic is to play like a man who's attentions are more on his naffing hair than the ball - so no functional alchoholic in their right mind would court his services?

Your right about Bale, Harry! He's not cutting the mustard right now, and we need Assou-Ekotto back in the squad, pronto! COYS!

So the solution for Bale "not cutting the mustard" is to bring in Assou-Ekotto, a liability to everyone every time he steps on the pitch? I'd rather see Bale not cut the mustard than see Assou-Ekotto with anything that can cut.

Secondly, that first image of Bale losing the ball then engaging in a race with Zokora to see who can get to Dempsey first, only for them both to get skinned by a simple cut inwards, could have easily been avoided if (1) one of them had called the other off Dempsey or (2) if Zokora wasn't such a bloody idiot and had tracked back when he saw Bale was clearly going to get there first. Instead we've got no one covering the middle and two men covering deep. Dempsey could have also put a pass across the middle to the other Fulham player who was in position for a one-time shot on goal. stupid stupid stupid.

ahhh The Bale Curse :\ how do we get the monkey out of our backs :) I called Gomes a cnut after the game but who wouldn't after he chucks the ball into the back of the net, the rest of the game he had a blinder some great saves. "he can go on to become a top keeper" but how long do we have to wait for it to happen until we are in the coke cup? 3 goals in the last 2 games & you can't blame anyone else. I watched Zamora back into him every corner by the time the ball got here he was almost in the back off the net. Same thing happened the other night before Sanchez came on, he set the backs at the 6 yard box so he had room to move. I hoped like hell when they let Robinson go the gaffes would go with him, but no they seem to be here to stay, at least he can stop a shot from 25 yards though. I just hope we have time. By the way totally agree with the woody comment

Look, if we're talking about shot-stoppers, then we've had two of the best ones playing right now. Gomes is incredible with some of the saves he makes. Unfortunately, there's more to being a keeper than acrobatics. That blunder was a million times worse (yes, a million) than Robinson's wiff against Croatia. Gomes has nothing to blame this on other than a lapse in concentration. Instead of catching the ball in his arms, he chose to try to catch it with his hands.
I know it's extremely difficult to make that split second calculation to determine that the ball has got a lot of spin on it and will sharply spin out to the side when it hits a flat surface (i.e. your hands), and it's easy for me to judge that watching a replay in slow motion, but we're not being paid to know that kind of stuff, he is.

I'm sick to death of these "he's a confidence player" excuses. Is that a joke? The one player on the pitch who we absolutely cannot afford to suffer from a "lack of confidence" is the bloody keeper. you think Peter Schmeichel let his past mistakes affect his mindset and performance in the next game? it is ridiculous and testament to DC's ineptitude that we would sign a keeper who was well known for having lapses in concentration after the Robinson situation. people were warning about it on this blog as well as in the papers.

I apologise. Upon further review, it seems as though Gomes did try to catch the ball (not very convincingly though) in his arms and belly and not with his hands. I'm still not happy, and he cannot be our long-term solution at keeper.

I'm keeping the faith in Gomes. He has been used to winning the regularly and playing in a team that can defend. From that he joined a team whose start can only be described as shambolic.

Harry got the best out of David James another keeper who has been maligned by the press and fans nationwide. And he will try and do the same for Gomes in the short term at least, but I don't think it would surprise me or many other people if he did try to get a proven Premiership keeper in the New Year.

In the meantime let's support our goalie. Or is the "Darren Bent is shit" brigade back out in force.

Fickle Spurs fans? Where do we get that reputation from.

Top man Harry for talking some sense on here as usual.

I'm more concerned about arrys tactics than bale or Gomez, we all know Jenas and Zokora can not play in the same team - we always struggle with those two in the centre to pin teams back and create chances. With Hudd and Luka in the middle it was stopping teams push on to us. Harrys time is up!!

we dont need to support him. we need to replace him.

why spend time effort and league position trying to mold him into a premier league goalkeeper when we can just go get a proper one in Jan.

nice enough bloke. cant keep goal for shit. Top class goalkeepers dont get laughed at on a weekly basis. trust me on this.

"He can go on to become a top goalkeeper in the Premier League."

The one position where potential just won't do is in goal, especially in a side second from bottom.

His confidence is shot and you can visibly see his jitters transferring to the defenders around him.

I don't hate the bloke, I feel sorry for him.

Thanks to Comolli there isn't adequate experienced cover to come in while Gomes gets his act together, so I think we're going to have to stick with him and hope for the best.

Not convinced he's good enough.

We've been on a wave of euphoria since Harry joined and it had to end sometime. Even a big dash of confidence, a smile on everyone's face and Harry's great communication skills cant solve every problem. Zokora has good days but would never get a game at the arse, chelsea, pool or manu. A goalie who (literally) doesnt speak the same language as his defenders and is used to a different style of play (less crosses, has had a few knocks and whose confidence is shaky at the moment. A young player (Bale) who doesnt seem to know his best position yet (winger or left back)and is still really learning his job - needs coaching!!. Ledders looks so much heavier/slower than he used to, whereas Woody is a good defender but speed isnt his main attribute either. I think Harry has done very well with the material he has got. He cant address the keeper or defensive midfield positions for another 6 weeks so we have to stick with the proven formula - give the players maximum support and encouragement all the time they are wearing the shirt and try to get them to play to their maximum potential. I do think if Gomes hasnt improved radically by Jan Harry will be bound to get someone in because too many mistakes like these will eventually sap everyone's confidence. Until then, I think we must stick with him - Cesar Sanchez just doesnt look big/athletic enough to make some of the saves Gomes does. One question I have - I thought we brought in a top goalkeeping coach from Europe last year and we have Pat Jennings there as well - bearing in mind both Robbo and Gomes' problems, what have they been doing?

Why does that last comment agitate me so?

Is it because, based on this season, which is really the first season he can be measured on, he has turned in a goals ratio in all games of 0.62, a joint top Premiership statistic with Nicholas Anelka?

Is it because if he was some greasy haired, headband sporting gent of European persuasion named Benttio who you'd only ever heard of on the basis of a couple of seasons reflective of Darren's 05/06, and 06/07 at Charlton, finishing as top Englishman, and club top scorer respectively, you would arguably already have his chant memorised and a shirt with his name on?

There is an interesting statistically based post on Bent which may open your eyes a bit.

LINK

On the game, I am equally disgruntled. Let's cut straight to the chase:

Nunchucks No Likee
That pale blue kit reminiscent of Coventry United. When was the last time we won a game in that kit? Does anyone know? Seriously. I'm asking. Because I don't remember. To say I don't like that kit don't do justice to the word don't. Haven't we all read that report on winning sporting teams avoiding wearing colours as weak as your nan's tea? Someone find that report. Email it to Puma. CC: Tottenham's duds department. It's your duty.

Hans Leitart. In the words of one Janet Jackson, What Have You Done For Me Lately, Hans*? Who was really the bungling incompetent in the Segers/Robinson conspiracy? Bobbo? Or was Hans Segers complicit? Is Tottenham's goalkeeping coach recruitment policy simply to recruit people called Hans? What next, striker coaches called Feet? (Haha, I kill me, I really do.)

Leitert has been with us a year now, and has been lamentable. Hit the road, Hans. Poach Portsmouth's David Coles, because on present form Gomes will make the Nunchucks No Likee list next week.

'cking catch something, dude. Anything.

* Janet never sang a song about Hans. I have used artistic licence and added this bit. I think it adds...oo

Giovani Dos Santos to Chelsea, Wayne Bridge to Spurs. Thats the only left back solution I see. Although could very well be that the Bale man is just slower to get motivated without cleavage.

Brave position on Gomes Harry. I applaud your loyalty but our league position does not afford adventurism. Shall we put in Sanchez and give Gomes some reserve games to get his groove back? If he is a world class goalie he iwll have a world class mentality and use the snub to come roaring back. If not, well then.... January 1st aint that far off.

Bale don't want 2 understudy Evra - he is with us for the long term. If not then 'Arry will have him polishing Pekhart's boots before you can say Solant...

lets start with the basics
he does not communicate with the back 4 at all, maybe he cannot, i dont know.
he cannot kick under pressure at all.
he is a good shot stopper but never gathers at first attempt, ever.
crosses - dracula
the worst thing that can happen now is for the defence to suffer and it surely will.
dropping him to regain confidence, for fucks sake does that really need explaining.

i reckon gomes is a top bloke and no doubt a day at alton towers with him would be blinding, but as my teams last line of defence? no!

I would sooner see Bale go to Liverpool or Manure, than see Two Saints go to fucking Chelsea.

This way, Southampton gets some much needed cash, Bale can jog the fuck on and we have enough money to buy Wayne Bridge outright from a team that doesn't need him. Everyone wins.

I also agree with Harry about Gomes.

Spot on again H. At the end of the season, Gomes will have won us far more points than he's given away. Defending set pieces is more than just a keepers responsibility. Didn't anyone see Woody's deflection for the first goal yesterday? Any top keeper will drop a clanger now and again so get off his back. It's the same old names screaming "get rid of Gomes", or "Bent is shit" open your minds you Knobs

Rewind to Wednesday night, 4 days ago, beating the scousers, celebrations regardless of individual errors. The FACTS are we are stuck with the squad until January. HArry likes what he's got, so thats good enough for me. Remind me again - why are we called fickle? Some people on here will slate a player wether he is outstanding or not. Harry brings the best out in players - fact.
How do you bring the best out in them?
By playing them.
Harry has been teling every player how good they are and look how we spayed the ball around against liverpol in the cup. Its an easy thing to tell somebody you think they are excellent, to prove you need to play them when they need their confidence back.
Stick with Gomes, keeping is all abopout confidence, look at the barrel rolling lardboy before he left.
