NATIONAL LEAGUE KICKS OFF AT PAGO PARK

American Samoa's domestic football competition got off to a flying start in both men's and women's competition last weekend with goals aplenty as the new FIFA goal project at Pago Park got a taste of senior action en masse.

The Football Federation of American Samoa (FFAS) Senior Men's competition has been split into two groups of eight teams with the top two teams from each pool progressing to a semi-final playoff, then final. Only one full round will be played before the semi-final stage.

In Pool 1, FC SKBC got off to a flying start as they defeated Flame On 12-2 in their opening match of the first round. Competition was much tighter elsewhere in Pool 1 with Konica FC earning a 3-0 victory over Tafuna Jets 2nds, Manuula Heat winning 3-1 over Pago Youth while Peace Brothers defeated Fagasa CCCAS Youth in a thrilling encounter by 3-2.

Pool 2 followed a similar pattern with Pansa defeating Aua Old School 15-2. Utulei Youth took second position after a 3-0 win over Ilaoa & Toomata. Konica Airbase had to work hard for a 4-2 win over Autali Misasa Katolik whilst Tafuna Jets drew 2-2 with Pago Eagles.

In the women's competition Black Rose defeated CCCAS Fagasa 12-2 to take top spot. Pago Girls were too strong for Kip McGrath Women, winning 3-0. Pansa Women and Brave Heart FC both recorded 3-0 wins over Tafuna Jets and Tafuna Jets 2nd while Utulei sit in 5th place on goal difference after a 3-1 win over Lion Heart.

The women's competition features ten teams with only one round to be played with the top two teams meeting in a final playoff.

American Samoa national team coach and technical director David Brand said the first round of matches were a great success with the ASFA Men's and Women's Senior Competition the first time eleven-a-side football had been played on the island "for years."

"Next year it would be great for both competitions to operate two full rounds and for the season to run from July-December.

It's just great to see football being played again and at a magnificent venue such as Pago Park and this FIFA Goal Project," Brand said.
