AUCKLAND - Waitakere United’s Head coach Chris Milicich is calling on his side’s professionalism and big game mentality to turn around a 3-1 deficit in the return leg of the Oceania Champions League final against Kossa FC at Trusts Stadium on Sunday.
Over the summer the West Auckland side won everything on offer domestically – an NZFC grand final win and minor premiership to go along with a Youth League title for the club’s academy – and Milicich is relying on the professional attitude of his semi-pro and amateur players to retain the Oceania trophy they won last year.
“Yes, we’ve been successful this season but the irony is it’s because when the big games come round we’ve been able to put everything else aside and do the job in front of us,” Milicich said.
“Now it comes down to one huge game.”
“It’s about getting out there and doing our job. We could have made excuses about the heat and conditions in the Solomons but we just didn’t play well enough and have got to go out on Sunday and play well.”
With the two-legged final delicately poised after Kossa’s stunning victory in Honiara and Waitakere fully aware that a 2-0 win would get them through on away goals, Milicich is out to grab the early initiative in Sunday’s decider.
“We’ll get onto the front foot as quick as we can, but will be dictated to slightly by the way they set up.”
“If you chase something really hard from the outset you can open yourself up to the counterattack but we’ll definitely be out to control the game early.”
Waitakere were met by hostile conditions in the Solomon Islands a fortnight ago – the soaring mid-afternoon temperatures matched by a vocal 20,000 strong home crowd – and Waitakere hope to turn the tables with a Trusts Stadium crowd boosted by the offer of free entry for members of football clubs or parents with children.
“A lot of kiwi fans don’t realise that when our teams play in the islands it’s a true away game – 20,000 people dead silent when your team does something but a roar of absolute noise if it’s their team,” Milicich said.
“Kossa now have to come and confront us at our place, and we want as many people there as we can, making plenty of noise. Kiwi crowds can be a little too nice at times but when you’re up there you certainly know you’re not the one they want to win.”
Should Waitakere retain their O-League title and claim Oceania’s spot alongside other continental champions at the FIFA Club World Cup in Japan, New Zealand’s wider footballing community also stands to benefit with the US$500,000 prize spread across the eight NZFC clubs and New Zealand Football.

Chris Milicich, you better take the defeat in good faith, rather then giving your opinion on crowd turnout, hot condition and what not. You went down to a better side. As I had mentioned to this media earlier, the ploy had started, I hope Kossa players does not visit this site not after the match is over. Chris Milicich is playing a mind game to divert player concentration. Well Milicich, I can tell you something, Kossa will not be intimidated so cheeply, you gotta take them on like a man rather then giving opinion of such. Go Kossa do us proud, don't bother what Waitakere wants to say, let them talk now, you do your talking in the field by shaking the net. Go Kossa go do us proud.
The best team win..go waitakere go .. go kossa go. salesh..don,t think about the past...Let you know.. That's how coach works when inerview by media...to motivate players and gain support from fans. Salesh you are the one that really disturbing here..
garciason, this forum is meant for sharing views & opinion and don't try to deprive our rights to do so in this forum. Please disappear from this forum if you can't tolerate our views & opinion. Salesh is sharing some views that I see truth about it. Coach Milicich is too boostful & can't simply accept their defeat..
I tell you coach Milicich, don't blame the heat & condition in Honiara. As a professional team, you must be able to adapt to all kinds of condition including the crowd support. You are crying baby trying to justify yourself while the truth is you didn't play well. Just say it plainly & simple. KOSSA will not count on your cold condition that is if you want to take advantage of that. Go KOSSA Go..Go Islanders Go!
Great news indeed..yes the best team always won..but remeber those who does not accept defeat always give excuss.. turning on the otherside of the coin..if KOSSA was going down by the Waitakere.. I think the same excusses will be made stating that KOSSA is still a club going up to that level. However, this may not happen to you KOSSA go for it.. you have shown yourselves turning down the mighty club of KIWI.. let the Islanders face it... may the winner be the best team...
Yes and LASTLY, RIGHT ON YOUR FACE MILICICH, KOSSA JUST NEED a 1-0 or a DRAW TO QUALIFY..
I attended the Press Conference in Honiara where Milicich boastfully told the local media that his boys can adapt to any condition(s) having played in similar conditions in the islands previously. Further to that, he also said they know how to cope and can adjust quite easily. However, his tone changed after they were beaten 3-1 by Kossa. He blamed the heat for his team's demise. I'm not at all surprised at his outburst. He's a desperate man trying to keep his job. To Kossa players don't be intimidated by what he said to the media. Just keep your cool and go into the match on Sunday with one thing....come away with positive results. This for our beloved country. Go Kossa Go!! Go Solo Go!!
Milicich seems to be talking as if he is the coach of a team that has the calibre of a Manchestor United. He should realise that he is the coach of Waitakere United full stop! Also, Milicich should talk on facts alone. That is that his team players have two legs and two hands and the same goes also to the players from Kossa. His players are not gods so that a word from their mouth would flatten the Kossa players to enable his team to have an unopposed run to the goal. Far from it Milicich, your team is human and the same goes for the members of the Kossa team. Do not talk as if you are the God of the universe.
I think Milicich's comments are quite misleading. he has obviously forgotten that Waitakere too has supporters and followers in Solomon Islands because of the two Solo players in the team. And when they scored their only goal at Lawson Tama there was shouting and cheering everywhere and not "dead silence" as he now claims. "The better team wins" and i totally agree with that preposition. When the Socceroos played at Lawson Tama some 3 years ago, it was also in harsh heat conditions, but because they were the better team, they managed to win thier game. So my advice to Milicich is that better save the best for later and do the talking during the game and when its over...GO KOSSA GO!
garciason, I really don't know what your problem is. I thought Milicich's comments were unfair, particulary giving heat and crowd as an excuse. But Like I said, these comments are directed to upset team Kossa, normally coachs' do this nowadays and I don't blame garciason, he may be be ill informed. But I had said before, Kossa needs to focus on the match and need not bother what is being said. I agree with garciason, that may the best team win but not on the expense of cheat, lie, intimidation or bullying tactics. If Waitakere thinks it can beat Kossa then why they are they coming with all excuses, like Soulsa had said Milicich said they can adopt to any condition, then why these excuses. Go Kossa do us Proud
Adaption to weather, climate conditions is one factor, playing best 90minutes of football is also another. Mentality, physically fit, you name it, the best team is the winner. I think we all know who has been winning uptill now. Go Kossa Go.. We are with you all the way!!
Chris Milicich should now take the pressure off him as KOSSA is coming to confirm their win. One thing is for sure. The only one goal that KOSSA need is definitely coming and this is not a prediction but a fact. So using the media to make excuses for their loss is not befitting.Go out there and do your best. The same goes to KOSSA you've done it and you can do it again. The weather is part of the challenge..but victory will be very sweet. GO KOSSA GO
Dont worry Kossa, Manchester United is going beat chelsea in Moscow so try ur best to meet them in Japan this year. Go kossa go!! U can do it,,best wishes
Heard rumours that it will be shown live on SI TV channel. Good for SI soccer fans. This is your chance Kossa to show what you are capable of and reaching the World Club Championship, because it's more likely you won't be having this chance next year.
If Kossa wins, this will be a great motivation not just for solomon island teams but every island teams. Islands teams have one main common problem, FINANCE, not like NZ and Aussie teams. So all islanders should go behind KOSSA.
folks...the match will shown live on Sky TV so we'll enjoy every moment of the match. Tell others who don't have access to this forum if you are in Honiara or Auki
I agree with pacifica. Our hope lies with Kossa to market islanders to the outside world. We lack finance, there is no question about it, however what we have is talent, country pride, players trust eacher other and support. We will tell the world one day that hey, we can also play and rub shoulders with the best in the world. I urge all islanders to support Kossa, for we have lot in common. I thanks Solo soccer for representing in 5 a side world cup and I am sure FIFA will assist development in these regions and thanks to Solo. You entry into League championship will again be an eye open for FIFA to promote players, especially in europe. Islanders elsewhere must be visionory and support Kossa for this will certainly open gateway to greater things to come. Go Kossa, by the grace of Lord, do us proud.
I agree with Salesh that is what Pacific Islander should do to support development in soccer in the region. A win should give us the motivation to strive more. We hope for the best outcome
All wantoks from PNG and Solomon Islands should rally behind KOSSA FC. Lets support KOSSA FC and ensure they qualify for Japan. Ol mangi mas kirap wantaem nao!
The clock is ticking and my heart is beating... Let's hope that the Islanders can do it this time. Go Kossa Go. Always behind for my pride being a Solomon Islander.
