TOTORI LANDS A PROFESSIONAL CONTRACT WITH PORTLAND TIMBERS

Monday, 21 April 08, 17:31 PM

HONIARA - Benjamin Totori has created history by becoming the first Solomon Islander to break into the lucrative American soccer league.

The Waitakere striker has signed a professional contract with the Portland Timbers in the United Soccer League (USL), pending international clearance.

The Timbers play in the USL First Division, the second tier of professional football in the United States.

He is expected to join his new club after the O’ League matches in Honiara on April 26 and May 11th Auckland.

Totori, 22, made his Solomon Islands National Team debut in 2007 with four goals in five 2010 World Cup qualification matches.

Recently, Totori competed with the Solomon Islands U-23 National Team during the Oceania Football Confederation’s 2008 Olympic qualification tournament in March.

In five games, Totori scored 10 goals to earn the tournament’s Golden Boot Award and helped the Solomon Islands finish second in the tournament. Totori has been a member of the Solomon Islands National Team pool since he was 15.

This season with Waitakere United, Totori has scored 10 goals in 18 matches to help the club maintain its first-place position in the NZFC.

His 10 goals rank among league leaders in scoring, and he is currently third in the race for NZFC’s Golden Boot Award – annually given to the league’s leading scorer.

Totori began his professional career in New Zealand with Youngheart Manawatu in 2005-06, and was named the club’s Rookie of the Year.

With Totori, the Timbers now have 23 signed players entering the 2008 season.

Totori’s break into the United States soccer market has been described as milestone by SIFF President Martin Alufurai.

An elated Alufurai could not hide his feelings saying Totori’s achievement was befitting for someone who works hard for it.

“We have been waiting for this for a long time, and it took Totori to help Solomon Islands go global. It has always been my federation’s intention to get our players break into other confederations,” he added.

Alufurai says Totori has finally broken the hoodoo by becoming the first Solomon Islander to leave the shores of Oceania to ply his football trade in another confederation of FIFA.

“It took Solomon nearly 20 years to realize this and I on behalf of SIFF and the football family would like to congratulate Totori for this fine achievement,” he said.

The SIFF president says Totori’s achievement is a challenge for aspiring young Solomon Islanders and sets a good example that with patience and individual hard work they can follow in his footsteps.

He reveals that under his federation’s policy – that is exactly what they want to achieve, to be able to get its players to play abroad.

“Surely Totori has entered at the right time when soccer’s attention is on the lucrative US market. Even the European countries are looking to America as a country with huge potential to become a leader in the soccer market – an example of course is David Beckham’s move to US to ply his trade.”

SIFF and Alufurai - why are you elated? What have you done to assist Totori achieve this - NOTHING. Shame on you Mr Alufurai for trying to get the credit for Totori's contract with the Timbers. What have SIFF done to market Solomon Islands players since that bloody 20 years you're talking about. Get real Mr Alufurai and start searching for markets abroad for this Solomon youngsters. Look at Molea - his father is doing it alone to try and market his son abroad - what have SIFF (Alufurai) done to help? SHAME ON SIFF AND ALUFURAI. Totori, let this be a benchmark for other Solomon youngsters. Do not wait for SIFF (ALufurai) to do something for you but rather do something for yourselves. Play to your best and attract interest from abroad.

Totori achievement should be a lesson to his soccer brothers in Solomon Islands and of course in the region. It was a fruit of discipline and commitment that he personally made, what most of players in Solomon Islands has lack is to discipline and to commit themselves to sport they love. I think there are lots of players who can play like Totori but they lack dispcipline because of other forces. Congradulation Totori for your achievement coz of your strong mind and wish your God's blessing of FOOTBALL.

Congratulation Mr.Totori and would like to wish you all the best in your new journey into uncharted areas for Solomon Isl soccer..."may the force be with you" Who knows, more oceanie players could be shipped over to USA next season... About SIFF and Totori's new contract, I'm not too sure of how SIFF assisted him. In my understanding, the deal was done over in New Zealand... Can anyone shed some light into this matter so that other soccer players would know what to do,if olketa like go blay lo home(USA)..

Congratulation Benjamin for yr well deserved position with yr future club. Am sure excited SIFF President has done little or no part at all on yr transfer arrangements except to enjoy all the previliges that go with his job. You have indeed been a role model for future SI professional players.

Reading thru Sissoko's comments....I could sum it up in one sentence. That Sissoko has personal grudges against Alufurai and SIFF.

Getting a contract overseas is not that easy. FYI, SIFF played a major part in Totori achievement. Do you think Totori would get a contract with Manawatu and later Waitakere without SIFF's endorsement? Not possible. SIFF saw the potential in this young man that is why they selected him in the various age-group, starting as an Under 16, U17, U20, U23 and Senior player with the senior team at the SPG in Samoa. His involvement with the Solomon Islands national teams helped him a lot in terms of exposure. If it hadn't been for that, he would not have gone to New Zealand. For you to say SIFF did nothing to help Totori achieve his dream is utter nonsense. What have you done to help raise standard of football in this country? Nothing, all you're good at is attacking people's personality.

Soulsa, I do not have any personal grudges against Alufurai or SIFF. What I want is more support for our players, and that is not forthcoming from SIFF or Alufurai. Players are not selected because SIFF want to promote them, rather they are selected because of their skills and their knowledge of the game - and thats the reason why Totori was selected. It does not take the work of an 'Einstein' brain to work that out. And its not SIFF that saw the potential in these young players but the coaches, so dont confused SIFF and Alufurai with the coaching job. SIFF's (and Alufurai's) job is more of an administrative nature, they should knock at the oversea club's doors marketing their players. Compile clips of these players and send them to clubs, support them by getting them to these clubs for trials - from past experiences players have been responsible for this all along.

Congrats to Totori. He has a bright future ahead of him. On SIFF, I think they have done their best in the circumstances. SIFF could only do so much with funds it has and this depends very much on the FIFA grant. I do not think the grant amounts to even $1 million Solomon dollars. Some of us seems to think that SIFF is awash with cash that it is not doing anything. Alas, no, SIFF is a poor Federation compared to those like Australia, the Asian countries, Europe etc. This derstandable given the large affluent economies these associations are located in and the marketability of their players and age group teams. For SIFF to do all the things that the Solomon Island nationals wishes it to do, it will need more than just $1 million Solomon dollars. Bata sore nao bicos SIFF bata karem baon lelebet!
