SELBY CASTS EYE OVER COOK ISLANDS DEVELOPMENT

Monday, 12 May 08, 12:10 PM

Fresh from a successful coaching course in Papua New Guinea, Oceania Football Confederation (OFC) Technical director Jim Selby turned his attention to the development of Cook Island football during a seven day visit early this month.

Selby’s visit targeted the Cook Island Football Association (CIFA) U-16 training squad, CIFA Administration and technical staff and local coaches.

Selby’s course included coaching demonstrations, mentoring, match analysis and facility mapping.

Selby was in the country for several reasons. He assisted with the set-up of a talented players program for potential World Cup players at U-17 and U-20 age levels.

He also helped set up age appropriate small sided games for children aged from 6-13 on age appropriate sized fields.

Getting kids active and playing at a young age is part of an active and healthy for life program implemented by CIFA.

“If kids can be active, enjoy the game and play just for fun at an early age, then it will carry with them for the rest of their lives,” Selby said.

Selby also helped set up an education program where local instructors deliver OFC courses to the local coaches

Selby will return to the Cook Islands in July while a number of Cook Island coaches have confirmed they will attend an instructor’s course Selby will run in Fiji in June.

“The idea is to build skills in local people so they can run their own coach education and development courses. This way you don’t have to bring people in all the time, instead you have locally based people with those skills.”

NEW ZEALAND WIN CONFIRMS TOP SPOT

Monday, 10 March 08, 02:30 AM

LAUTOKA - New Zealand brushed aside Cook Islands by 8-0 and will now turn its attention to the New Zealand Olympic Committee (NZOC) to confirm its place at the XXIX Olympiad Men’s Football Tournament in Beijing.

Cook Islands got eleven players behind the ball in an effort to finish this tournament as respectably as possible. That forlorn hope was shattered as early as the 8th minute when Phil Edginton finished from close range after latching onto a Jeremy Brockie corner.

Brockie doubled New Zealand’s lead on 15 minutes when he guided a header past Cook Islands goalkeeper Remi Wearing. The result was never in doubt after that yet New Zealand couldn’t find its way past a Cook Islands team relying as much on good fortune as sheer physical effort to avoid humiliation.

By midway through the second half Cook Islands resistance was showing signs of disintegration in the sweltering heat combined with the physical, mental and professional edge of opponents by now Beijing-bound.

Four goals in eleven minutes to Sam Messam, Daniel Ellensohn, Jason Hayne and Costa Barbarouses propelled New Zealand into a 6-0 lead and any lingering doubts of a conservative score line were extinguished for Cook Islands.

Jason Hayne added a seventh goal for New Zealand in the 78th minute before captain Aaron Scott provided the eighth and final goal in the 90th minute to complete a happy afternoon’s work for the Oly-Whites, Stu Jacobs and New Zealand Football.

PAPUA NEW GUINEA SEAL FIRST WIN

Saturday, 08 March 08, 00:09 AM

LAUTOKA – David Muta has fast established himself as one of this tournament’s star performers with a string of captivating displays. Affable off the pitch as he is gifted upon it, Muta, who has played with distinction in a team that has otherwise been beaten heavily, nevertheless stamped his trademark all over this match against the Cook Islands.

A wonder strike on 16 minutes set the tone for the next 90 minutes as Muta pulled the strings against a Cook Islands side ravaged by the loss of three players – John Bataillard, Gichin Fuhiniu, Steve Willis and the rested Remi Wearing.

New goalkeeper Abraham Jim could not have made an international debut under more trying circumstances as this Cook Islands team bravely tries to punch something above its weight in an environment where little mercy is shown. But the youngster gave a good account of himself and was afforded as much protection as the hard-working Mii Joseph and Adrian Shepherd could give him.

Inevitably, even that cover wasn’t ever going to be enough and Tau Winnie helped himself to the first of two goals for the evening when he stooped low to slam home a header on 19 minutes. Winnie added a second on 51 minutes.

Cook Islands were not without goal chances – twice they broke through Papua new Guinea’s porous defence only to see Gabina beaten but a covering defender clearing off the line. Joseph Le Mouton’s header on 40 minutes the closest the team has come to registering a goal all tournament.

One man who will take fond memories away from this tournament is Raymond Gunemba. Two goals against New Zealand and another impressive strike here, Gunemba alongside Muta and Samuel Kini, has shown that Papua New Guinea has plenty of exciting talent.

Koriak Upaiga (64’), William Mobbs (64’) and substitute striker Niel Hans ( 76’) – one of the Papua New guinea National Soccer League Telikom Cup’s top scorers – rounded off the scoring.

Cook Islands coach Tim Jerks was philosophical in defeat.

“It’s difficult to be harsh with these players and it does no good to have a go at them when they lose – you have to try and be positive all the time.

They are a very young side and you can see the difference in experience.”
