Players, Money & More Money....oh and how about a little respect just for a change

Monday, 07 July 08, 09:42 AM

Yesterday I had one of those great Sunday afternoons where you flick from one great sporting occasion to another and back again with a tap of the remote. The strangest part about it was the lack of any football - not one tiny bit of it. Reading Arseblog and many other blogs there is a feeling amongst those of us of a certain age (I think old is the best way to describe it) that we've had enough of the bollocks that surrounds footballers, their agent pals and their desire for more and more money for doing less.

Even if you're not a tennis fan any sport fan could not help but be drawn to the intensity and sheer drama of the Federer/Nadal Wimbledon final. I'm not a great tennis afficiando but I love sport drama and this was up there with great individual duels , Coe v Ovett in Moscow, Ali V Foreman, Senna v Prost -  intense sporting drama. Now we all know that tennis players get paid well (probably better than many footballers at the very top but less if you're a decent player - a Joey Barton equivalent, though you probably don't beat the crap out of people on your nights out) but despite the intensity, there was no anger or hate towards the other player or the umpire or the ball boys or anyone. It was so much more revealing to see individual sportsmen (at the peak of their powers) wanting to win but keeping respect (we saw that word a lot at Euro2008) for their opponents and the officials. Not only that but despite the pain of losing and the joy of winning the aftermatch comments were gracious in both defeat and victory.

So maybe it's because it's the summer or because I'm in a different country but I just loved the Grand Prix followed by the Tour de France and capped off by the Wimbledon final as much as any great football weekend - and I didn't need the Sky Super Sunday hype to tell me it was a great weekend.

Of course, I'll be watching the new season with enthusiasm but now, more than ever, it's the team I adore and not the money grabbing players who inhabit the shirt  for this particular year - if they can be bothered. Arsene knows what's going on and as supporters (who cannot change allegiance) we have to have more faith in him now than ever before.

I can't be arsed to see what agents have put in the papers today....
