People in the U.S. are crazy about lazy 10 second action sports like american football and baseball. The MLS is getting much less than it would want in popularity and profit. This is why americans just are not into soccer. You can't make someone do what they don't want to do.
My small soccer squad of kids under 16 is full of new kids that have barely ever played soccer. That's how you increase interest in soccer. By informing kids yourself, not posting summarys of profits of each MLS game on ESPN. I doubt bringing David Beckham to Hollywood will popularize the sport. It just makes it more interesting to people who like the sport already.
My U-16 team is far better than it was at the beginning of the season. It shows progress for the growth of the passion of the game. Freddy Adu is heading for somewhere in Europe and we are left to look for another "face" of the league. It is good for the MLS to have Beckham, but it just seemed sad to me watching it all over the news. I just needed to get that all off my chest.
Please I except all comments on my point of view.
I agree. I also do not understand why america dislikes futbol so much. I mean some people criticize the game by saying that it is to long, boring and low scoring. Well I have tried to watch a
baseball game for many years and I have not been able to watch an entire game (boring). What is the appeal I do not understand. It will take alot of work to make the beautiful game work in the US.
People have to appreaciate a futbol game that will end at 0-0 but was still a great game. Beckham is a good player but not the best. He is good but he is not Cristiano Ronaldo or Messi or Ronaldinho,
etc, etc ,etc. I think the US is looking for a guy that also has sex appeal and will bring alot of people for his looks. I mean I think they can pay somebody like Tevez that much money and to my
opinion he is beter than Beckham but he will not have the same marketing appeal that Beckham brings.
Ok guys a little history lesson. there was this league called the NASL. it lasted in the US from 1968 to 1984. in the early time period of the NASL attendance was low around 3 to 5 thousand in the
late 60's it increased to around 6 thousdand in the mid 70's and then a gentleman by the name of Pele ( mayber you heard of him) joined the New York Cosmos and attendance went from 7k to 10k in one
year and subsequently topped out at 14k on average around the league Can becks have that kind of sucess...maybe but be mindful that the reason the NASL folder was b/c the big stars kept playing in
europe and the guys who could have been great soccer players started making a lot of money playing the big three in the US. as long as the big three have the revenue our best atheletes will go to
those sports. Imagine if Jordan would have played soccer
Tevez has not (yet) won the European Champions League... and since that is considered the benchmark in world club football, he would have no appeal to 'new fans' of MLS.
i see it in two ways. Becks lifting the lowly Galaxy team OR a trophy (or two) by the US national team. Becks = he may still have some tricks under his sleeve from the last 4 months of play with Real
and England, and that may carry on and rub some of the magic (err, luck) to his Galaxy teammates and lift the trophy at end of season. US Team= Gold Cup, e... not as prestigious as Euro, but if they
could have added the trophy from Maracaibo (highly unlikely), an unbeaten run for Gold at the '08 Olympics, and maybe, just maybe a Finals appearance 3 years from now in S.africa (winning it all is
pushing it), one can say Futbol finally = football / baseball in the U.S.
SoccerCell - the NASL was nothing but an excuse for Americans to get into soccer. Great players like Beckenbauer, Pele, Johann Cruyff and others joined it because they knew those were the main
influential players that went all around the world..... gee.... don't you think is happening again, in some way??
I agree with JLUis. SoccerCell, Pele did make the fans go from the tens of thousands, to the hundreds of thousands and the millions, as well. But, that was Pele. The best football player EVER! He
could do those type of things. Beckham, is no better than a f*cking USL player. The only reson he is so known, is because of his free-kicks and his ability to bend a ball better than anyone on the
planet. MAYBE even Ronaldinho, but like I said, MAYBE. Becks is NOT a God, so all Beckham fans need to get that out of their f*cking heads. Trust me, if Beckham couldn't bend a ball so good, like he
does, he would NOT be so known, as he is. That is ALL FACT!
Alright... all I wanted to say is that Pele and the rest of the best legends did their work while in the states......while Beckham is just about to do so. So let's see what happens.
Beckam is a good player but I don't think he's gonna make soccer becoming popular like pele did in the past, in the State. Even today I'm stile asking myself why they paid all this Money for a player
like him. thats crazy to see shit like that, so what can I said than shut my mouth, If I said he don't deserved all this money they probably gonna said that Haitianforlife is hater. I don't want to
hate on others for love of god. If U a hater stay fuck away from me. when I made my opinion please don't said that haitianforlife is angry person he is angry about the world. Fuck the world I don't
even Have time to play with they ladies have cuz money is better, if u don't like my comment I don't mind to let me know that but don't said that haitianforlife is mad or angry.
Yes the future holds the outcome of this situation in America. But it could be a while.
Hi guys, I'm just dropping by to say that I'm on a break, a kind of vacation after the Copa America. But I've been reading your blogs and this Beckham / MLS issue will be the first thing I'll address
when I come back next week. But you guys are doing a great job even mentioning the old NASL and its success. I'll be back soon!
Let me be clear i am not crazy enough to say that becks is like Pele...never would i say that. The situation is not even the same. There is a following for US soccer its just not as big as it is in
Latin America, Europe or Africa because the best atheletes in the US play the big 3 (american football, basketball and baseball) and technically soccer is the 6th most popular sport in the US there
are the big 3 then NASCAR, GOLF and then soccer (baffling) Becks by himself will not make Soccer compete with the big 3 but winning on an international leve will make soccer more relevant in the US.
But the US is not investing in Soccer the way it did when the NASL was around. Remember there was no MLS until the US went to the quaterfinals in the world cup in 94 so like everything else in the US
winning is the most important thing...besides money of course
In my opinion, Americans don't get football/soccer or like the game for various reasons. The top being 1- was not created by Americans 2- no commercial breaks 3 - no media promotion. Hopefully we
will at least get no 3 with Becks. On a separate note, I feel sorry for Adu. He has so much potential, but because he is a bit of a diva and wants to go to Europe, US Soccer or MLS puts him in Real
Salt Lake? If he is the future of US Soccer, he needs to be coddled like the other big or diva stars like Ronaldo and should be in the top teams or markets, IE LA, NY, Chicago. We need to take care
of our stars. Very sad.
I don't think Beckham going to LA is an awful thing -- I think all it can do is help. Remember, Gretzky went to LA and brought hockey to the US (well at least made it more popular). Since he went to
LA, the NHL expanded and popularity grew to an all-time high (granted a lockout and a lost season ruined that). The MLS -- which I will admit I don't follow much -- is talking of expanding, and I
believe will be the No. 4 sport in the US in a few years. There is no way soccer will overtake American football, baseball or basketball anytime soon.
Well, first of all, it's called football. I'm American, but the word "soccer" belongs to AMERICAN FOOTBALL, not to our sport. For some reason, some of these retarded Americans think that catching a
ball and running with it in your hands (American football), should be called football. Anyway, that's a different story. I agree with Xtreme1010, that football won't overtake American football,
basketball, or baseball in the United States, because Beckham is not good anymore (Has he ever been?). The MLS needs talented players and the MLS is NEVER going to get one, unless he's about to
retire. The only reason people want to see Beckham...his looks and his free-kicks (Notice the fact that ONLY L.A. Galaxy fans like Beckham, no one else gives a shit about him).
Don't get me wrong... I think American football is an awesome sport and I follow it relgiously. However, I think Beckham gets a household name into the sport in America (plus doesn't hurt that Posh
Spice came to the US also). Within 5 years, I believe football (soccer) will be the No.4 sport and possibly third in the American sports hierachy. Basketball popularity is highly just because it fits
the hip hop generation. American soccer needs a big name (like basketball has LeBron) to helps its popularity. And most Americans are ignorant to say that soccer is just kicking a ball around when
all of us know that is not the case at all. A full game takes a lot of out of the body. I have played soccer, I have played ice hockey, baseball and football and by far after a soccer game takes the
most out of the body. Plus, it is a lot more physical then most Americans understand
If Americans can sit though baseball it can sit through soccer matches. i think Freddy Adu will be great no matter where he goes the next Pele'.........not so much. Soccer in the US can be very
popular if the US starts winning. Basketball is a prime examplem, for a long time the rest of the world was playing catch up to the US in basketball (dream team anyone?) but now team from South
America (Argentina) and Europe (Greece) are playing and beating the best the US has to offer in basketball. As long as the US keeps trying investing and getting some of its best atheletes to play the
"beautiful game" the US will be able to compete.........one day
Americas love for the sport of football/soccer is growing. America is like the new kid in the school cafeteria, so many different groups and cliques we don't know where to start or whom to talk too,
and to make matters worse we come off as an arrogant ass that no one likes.....then one kid says, "Hey your new, nice to meet ya my name is David Beckham."
Freddy Adu, the next Pele? Don't make us laugh, SoccerCell. Xtreme1010, football already has a big name(s), Ronaldinho, Fabio Cannavaro, Thierry Henry, Robinho, Lionel Messi, to name a few. If every
American needs more than those guys, to watch a game of 11 v. 11, then they're assholes. They should just have a goddamn barbecue and then stick a basketball up their ass, if they can't appreciate
our sport. That's why people hate America, in foriegn countries. Obviously not because of football, but because Americans don't appreciate things that other countries do for them.
Right. The only thing americans appreciate about other countries is the vacation spots and beautiful sights. We need to see that football is an international sport that is easy to love and show
others that.
Adu the next Pele. Please let's not say that again. Pele was magic. Adu is an Ok player that will never reach the caliber of Pele.
I said "Adu will be great whereever he goes the next Pele' not so much" .......That means HE WILL NOT BE THE NEXT PELE. But i think he will be great. And American fans of futbol' do appreciate
Ronaldinho, Fabio Cannavaro, Thierry Henry, Robinho, Lionel Messi, the issue is that the US does not have anyone in the US of those guys caliber.......we have Landon Freaking Donovan of all people.
Lets face it we don't have an appreciation for it as a whole because we are not winning at it..........as egocentric as it sounds thats true. In America ...Everybody loves a winner
SoccerCell, that is where you are wrong. Only American fans of football (soccer), appreciates Ronaldinho, Cannavaro, etc. Any other American who sees a game of 11 v. 11 on their TV, will turn the
channel. And that's why we footballers and football fans get pissed off at most Americans. They're fucking assholes and they deserve to be hated for things like that.
Hate breeds hate, bottom line. I will agree that the majority of Americans are blind to the trial and tribulations that the rest of the worlds populations struggle through, but that is also the truth
as it pertains to other countries views of the US. I love football, no matter what team, player, country, I love a great battle on the pitch. America will come around, look at how much more media
coverage has increased. Time will bring good things, hating on those that don't, that is a waste of time.

First off - Bravo for keeping the Soccer Culture alive and showing these kids what's this sport about. However, I think every sport needs an "extra" to bring in people that might not be as interested
as those who have a passion for it. Beckham is considered a "god" [which I don't think he deserves such title] amongst his fans but I believe that with his skills might open the interest of those who
doubt soccer in this country.
gretzky did with hockey before ... beckham could be the same. and if he does, jimmy kimmel said "so nobody would be watching soccer 15 years from now."
