About the Urawa Reds

Officially the Urawa Reds football club name is supposed to be 'Urawa Red Diamonds, but no one has called them that since about 1995. The reason is that that the 'diamonds' is a reference to the Mitsubishi logo. The club's parochial fans quit using the reference to their financial backer because they pride themselves on being 'a club for the citizens of Saitama' and they weren't thrilled about giving Mitsubishi a free ride. Conversely, Urawa Reds were never going to 'officially' change their name because it would upset their generous sponsor, Mitsubishi. So the situation is that everybody calls them Urawa Reds.
