Football is officially recognised as the national sport in the Solomon Islands. With numerous competitions running year-round, the Solomon Islands Football Federation (SIFF) has a busy time ensuring the game continues to grow and develop. SIFF was founded in 1978 and became a full FIFA member in 1988 largely thanks to the late Alan Boso who saw the potential of Solomon Islands football. Since then the association has grown from strength to strength.
Through the FIFA Goal Project, SIFF has seen the development of an international playing field at Lawson Tama Stadium where 20,000 fans frequently gather to watch domestic and regional competition such as the O-League. SIFF has introduced a variety of programmes targeted at the grassroots and elite level and has shown strong support for women’s football, beach soccer and futsal. The Bilikiki and Kurukuru teams have been success stories with strong performances at the FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup and FIFA Futsal World Cup respectively to put the Solomon Islands on the world map for these relatively new sports. The national men’s side had a breakthrough year in 2004 win they finished runners-up to Australia in the OFC Nations Cup. Meanwhile, Solomon Island clubs have performed well in the O-League over recent years.
SIFF is led capably by President Martin Alufurai, who has been honoured as a recipient of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) for his long career of service to sport. General Secretary and football enthusiast Eddie Ngava is charged with running the day to day activities of SIFF.
