The event was Kumar’s first taste of international competition outside the Oceania region and he says his appearance at the FIFA-sanctioned tournament was a good learning experience.
“I can proudly say that this was a very successful outing for me," he says.
"I have learned a lot and this will help me go a very long way in my career as a referee. It was a good experience to officiate on another stage and at a different standard."
The 28-year-old was part of the OFC referee trio that officiated at the event. The trio was led by Tahitian referee Norbert Hauata and also included Kiwi assistant referee Mark Rule.
Kumar took part in two matches as an assistant referee, more commonly known as a linesman, with the highlight being the bronze medal playoff between hosts Singapore and Montenegro.
“I would like to thank Fiji Football Association and OFC for giving me this opportunity," he says.
The Lautoka referee was also lucky enough to meet FIFA President Joseph S. Blatter on the trip.
“I had a chance to meet Mr Blatter during an official dinner. I had not met him before and it was good to finally come face-to-face with him,” Kumar says.
Based on his experience in Singapore, Kumar believes Fiji has the potential to send more officials to similar international events.
“I think Fiji has the talent to officiate at major tournaments like the FIFA World Cup. We have the resources here and I believe everyone needs to work together to progress,” he says.
