Futsal

Mission
Futsal in Oceania is very much on the rise. The popular small-sided game forms an important part of the competitions and technical programmes for both OFC and a growing number of member associations. OFC has made a commitment to promote and structure the sport of futsal in Oceania by means of competitions and courses that encourage its members to do the same.

Futsal courses
The OFC and FIFA deliver a comprehensive range of futsal development and coaching courses. With the support of FIFA’s goal project, futsal in Oceania also receives a major boost with the creation of new facilities such as the state of the art court at the national academy in Samoa. Similar projects are set to be inaugurated across the region in the next two years.

Futsal is also playing a pivotal role in football player development in Oceania. Due to the game’s many technical benefits, regular futsal activities are now a common feature of many member association grassroots and youth football programmes.

OFC Futsal on the world stage
The presence of Solomon Islands at two FIFA Futsal World Cups and the success of the annual OFC Futsal Championship has helped put the game on the map in the region, with over 20,000 registered players now participating in competitions for males and females at all levels across the confederation.

FIFA Futsal World Cup Thailand 2012 saw OFC representatives Solomon Islands make history for the confederation with an historic first ever victory - a thrilling 4-3 win over highly-ranked Guatemala - but with the ever-improving level of futsal across the region, the legendary ‘Kurukuru’ can expect stiff competition from New Caledonia, New Zealand, Tahiti and Vanuatu for OFC’s solitary qualifying spot at next year’s tournament.
The next year will see the profile of futsal rise to an unprecedented level, particularly at the 2015 OFC Futsal Championship in Tahiti, which will serve as the qualifying tournament for FIFA Futsal World Cup Colombia 2016.
