About Tonga Football Association

The inauguration of Tonga's goal project in 2004 is widely anticipated. The new facilities will not only contain international standard fields, but also a national academy and new headquarters for the Tonga Football Association.

Once opened, the TFA will transfer all its domestic competitions to the facility and will also run their development programmes accordingly. Future national sides will assemble there with elite players attending the academy.

Since the arrival of former Real Madrid Milan Jankovic as the association's technical director and national coach, Tonga's national teams have steadily improved with rapid progress being made since 2002.

Tonga enjoyed a highly successful South Pacific Games with its women's team winning the bronze medal while the senior men performed beyond expectation and held their own against higher ranked opponents Tahiti and New Caledonia. Tonga managed a draw with Papua New Guinea in a match PNG was expected to win easily.

At the recent Olympic men's qualifiers in Auckland, Tonga finished third behind New Zealand and Vanuatu, managing two wins over Cook Islands and American Samoa. But it was their gutsy performance against New Zealand which caught the eye. Though losing 0:2, Tonga held New Zealand goal-less in the second half.

Women's football is in a healthy position in Tonga. Finishing third at the OFC U-19 Women's Qualifiers and third against the South Pacific Games, this is reflective of a strong domestic women's league.

The Tongan national league and annual knockout cup are the main club fixtures on the TFA calendar. The Schools boys and girls national league is also proving popular with competitions also run in the primary schools.
