HAVE YOUR SAY: TOP FOOTBALLER IN OFC

Tuesday, 18 March 08, 11:41 AM

It is a very busy time of year for the top male footballers in Oceania.

The region’s top U23 players have been involved with the recent OFC Men’s Olympic Qualifying tournament in Fiji, the O-League is in full swing with OFC’s top six teams battling it out throughout five different countries and the domestic leagues around the region are exciting fans on a weekly basis.

As often happens with demanding schedules, the true talent rises to the top, and some real stars have emerged on both the domestic and international scenes across OFC.

Solomon Island international Benjamin Totori smashed his way to the golden shoe crown in Fiji with a staggering 10 goals in four games to cap off an exceptional individual performance. Totori is also poised one goal behind Golden boot leader Graham Little in the NZFC and has been giving defenders nightmares all season with his electric pace and silky skills.

Roy Krishna has emerged as the ‘pin up boy’ of Fijian soccer following some scintillating performances for Fiji and Labasa. Krishna scored three goals at the recent Olympic tournament in Fiji and was the catalyst for most of Fiji’s attacking flair. In a similar mould to Totori, Krishna has a slight figure but is very quick and plays with intelligence. The two are set to form a lethal partnership for OFC heavyweights Waitakere United when they join forces.

Auckland City captain Ben Sigmund has been the defensive rock that Auckland has built their NZFC title campaign on. Sigmund is strong, good in the air and reads the game well and his fine run of performances has attracted attention of the Wellington Phoenix who have announced their interest. Sigmund has scored four times in 16 starts for Auckland.

Other standout performers in OFC include Pierr Wajoka (AS Magente), Jose Hmae (AS Magente), Alick Maemae (Makuru), Teva Zaveroni (TAC), Naea Bennett (AS Pirae), Reginald Davani (Kossa),Allan Pearce (Waitakere United).

The question we have for you is: Who is the best player in OFC that currently plays within the Oceania region and why?

Just leave a comment in the box below to join the debate and please remember to keep your posts clean and respectful.

For me the best player in OFC has to be Ryan Nelsen - but if you were gojng to select from that list...it has to be Benjamin Totori - he's played at Club World Cup, NZFC, OLeague and looks
like he could be a Solomon Islands great one day

Watching the recent OFC U23 qualifier Benjamin Totori has played skillfully that his electric footworks are able to break through defenders. He was also the highest goal scorer in NZ in the last
    session

I think discipline plays an important role when it comes to choosing the best player and not just skills and the number of goals a person scores.a person can be scoring goals but without proper
discipline he could sitting on the bench fulltime. Personally think Roy Krishna is the best player in the Oceania.

I would go for Benjamin Totori. He's Oceania's best player at the moment. Can the OFC assist top players like Benji to move elsewhere i.e. Europe or Asia to ply his trade. He's a top player

likewise the same should be done for other island players like Roy Krishna. If African players can do well in European leagues, I have no doubt about our Island players.

I close my fingers for Benjie, for goal scoring cababilities, sneaky moves, outstanding footwork and clever set pieces.. Others such as Roy and Devani are good choices but for the first choice
candidacy, I would go for Benjie!

I follow closely the NZFC games here in NZ. Benji demolishes the defence with his footwork and pace. He is a crowd puller and a joy to watch. I[ve heard a little bit about his background. Like
most of the island players, he comes from a modest family ând the little money that he makes he sends back to the Solomons to support them. Hes playing football for the luv of it and also to
assist his family. I definately vote Benji as the current best in Oceania.

Totori has demonstrated a combination of talent, skill, fitness and agility. His love for soccer has seen him perform so well. He should be given the notch to be the oceania soccer top footballer

of the year. Totori stay committed and start using your intelligence in the game. Listen to advise and apply what you have heard. I want to see palying in Europe next, yes you will get there
    if
you believe you can do it and of course with God's help.

I definitely go Benjie Totori, he is so far the best finisher in the oceania region. All players even the best in the world get yellow cards and red cards..,look at maradona, baggio, zidanne,

beckham and the list goes on and on...so brada dont place your votes on the cards.. situations sometimes are unavoidable but the skills and talents of players remain unchanged.. Benjie is the

best and I place my vote on him...Go Solo Go!

I have had the opportunity in watching Totori play in NZ and also watched him play in Fiji during the recent OFC U/23 Qualifiers. He is defence destroyer and during one interview one defender
admitted having troubles with Totori everytime he moves with the ball. He is my fan and boy, this lad should be given a chance to try the European leagues, I believe he can make it. Keep it going
Totori, one day you can be one of the world's best too.

The big question is..... Who is the best in OFC? As i watched the recent OFC U23 in lautoka and the NZ league this year N last year, I saw many young talented players.
    But when U talkin about
goals scoring machine! Benjiman totori is that machine. His fast foot work and sneaky move turn defenders in to disasters. His ablity and passion for football was really great.. He can match up
with the likes of Terry Henry, Kaka, Etoo and other best players in the world.
So when comes to OFC. Benjiman Totori should be the candidate........
Al da best bro in your future soccer
career... you'll be there some day..

OFC has so many skilfull players that need to become very good players to reach International Level, it is time now for OFC to do something about it. I really beleive an Oceania Selection Team (

U17 or U 20 ) touring regularly Europe will help to reveal our talented players to European clubs and we know that our players need to enter big clubs to improve their standard. OFC need to
    step
in to promote our good players. When we watch players like Totori, Krishna, Wajoka ... we know we have good players but now we need to have stars like Karembeu, Rufer .
    So Please OFC
    HELP.

vote for jean Nako Naporal. Please respect other peoples view.. Benjie may be the best but there are other good players around that can be voted as well. Lets wait and see the final result..

I agree with fang. I am a Benjie fan, admiring him in everything he does on the field. However his haircut in the photo does not speak well of him. Great Soccer players have very special
haircuts, Roberto Baggio with the famous pony tail style, David Beckham with the popular mohocan haircut style, Etoo, Carlos, Denilson, Ronaldiho and Ronaldo with his roman soldier haircut style.
I am not suggesting that Benjie should copy one of those mentioned above but at least have a nice clean haircut and an admired stylish that will become a trademark for you. Can you try my man?

Dont think so?,,,Karembeu is not eligible. Think small OKS, we are talking OFC here not those playing in other leagues. Cos the question is: Who is the best player in OFC who curently plays
within the Ocean region and Why? No one disputes Karembeu's as the regions best but I disagree with your suggestion that he is the best of all times, mind you OKS, others are coming up and can be
even better than Karembeu, the likes of Totori, Krishna and others are emerging,... Many other Karembeu's are yet to be formed, so keep it straight to the point.

I like Benjie's hairstyle....it is unique and reflect his background. You dont have to have a clean haircut or a mohican or a skin head to be admired. We look at the skills. If you think he's
hairstyle is not up to the international standard, then try watching the Premier League, you'll be amaze by some of the hairstyles, people like Jeolene Lescott for Everton or Sagna for
Arsenal.....Totori's hair is much better compared to them....anyway...i place my bets with Totori!
