LABASA MAINTAIN UNBEATEN RUN IN NATIONAL LEAGUE

Monday, 14 July 08, 11:02 AM

The Vodafone Labasa remains unbeaten in the New World National Football League, with Ni Vanuatu striker, Joseph Namiriau, playing a key role in the 4-0 win over Nadi on Saturday.

The side thumped the previously unbeaten Nadi side, which had the services of Solomon Islander, Vahid Namo.

Nadi also fielded former national defender, Viliame Toma.

Labasa’s Ajesh Narayan scored the first goal in the 37th minute of the first half as the Babasiga Lions led 1-0.

Namiriau than got on the score sheet and now has scored in every game he has played since joining Labasa last month.

He later set up Waitakere United striker Roy Krishna before Labasa goalkeeper, Shamal Kumar scored from the penalty spot.

Labasa coach Bal Sanju Reddy said that his side’s performance improved from last week’s match against Lautoka where they beat the sugar city team by 2-1.

Reddy said the fitness level improved and the boys worked things out on their own while on the field.

He said the Babasiga boys proved to be the best team in the Super Six tournament.

In another match, rivals Vodafone Ba and Lautoka played out a 0-0 draw.

Seven yellow cards were flashed in the fast paced exciting encounter. Ba had Malakai Kanihewe, Kiniviliame Naika, Alvin Singh and Jone Vesikula booked along with Ilaitia Tuilau, Netani Momoivalu and Jone Vono Junior of Lautoka.

Both teams created scoring chances, Ba striker Maciu Dunadamu squandered two from right in front of the goal while for the Blues, Momoivalu had Jone Sorolo fully stretched in the best opportunity of the first half.

A reflex save by Sorolo also kept out a Valerio Nawatu freekick as Lautoka forwards ran rampant in latter stages of the second half.

There were no Bottom Four matches played.

Teams take a break from this weekend, when the first round of the FMF/Blue Gas Battle of the Giants will be played.

The matches will see Labasa play Nasinu at Subrial Park, while Lautoka and nadroga will battle at Churchill Park.

On Sunday, Fiji Bitter FACT champions, Navua will play Tavua at home, while Rewa and Nadi clash at Ratu Cakobau Park.
