MAKURU KOLOALE FINAL ENDS IN CONTROVERSY

Tuesday, 10 June 08, 10:16 AM

HONIARA - The National Clubs Championship (NCC) grand final match between Makuru and Koloale ended in controversy yesterday as the penalty shoot-out to decide Solomon Islands representatives in next season's Oceania Football Confederation (OFC) O-League ended amid scenes of acrimony at Lawson Tama Stadium.

Makuru players and officials protested after match referee Andrew Moli awarded a goal he disallowed earlier and gave the win to Koloale.

The day began brightly enough with the match played under perfect conditions before a good sized crowd.

The opening exchange was evenly fought between the two teams and chances went begging in regulation time and extra time.

Koloale and Makuru had met twice before this final, in the grand final of the Super 8 Challenge and in the Telekom National Clubs pool match.

Koloale won the penalty shootout in the Super 8 Challenge and drew the pool match to set them up for this grand final match.

Both teams would be disappointed that they had not been able to score in regulation time which saw the match going into extra time.

National Under 23 and Koloale goalkeeper Shadrack Ramoni pulled off a couple of fine saves denying super striker Commins Menapi and Batram Suri from finding the back of the net.

On the other side of the pitch, Ramoni’s number two at the recent OFC Under 23 championship Leon Lekezoto was also in his top form.

He had to stand in for his number one, Felix Ray who was suspended following an after-match incident last Friday when Makuru played Kossa in the semifinals.

Menapi and Suri combined well to test Koloale defence unit who are defiant and fought on till the end of the match.

But, as the match headed into extra time, it became apparent that it would end a goal less draw and require a penalty to separate the two teams.

With tensions already high the potential for trouble was ever present.

Against this background the penalty shoot out ended amid scenes of acrimony after a protest by Makuru players and supporters after referee Andrew Moli awarded a goal he had earlier disallowed.

However, the assistant referee who officiated the penalty shoot out did not raise his flag to indicate that the goal was scored.

Koloale players complained bitterly to the match referee who dished out a yellow card to Bule who persistently complained why the goal was disallowed.

The match referee then consulted his assistant and reversed his earlier decision and gave the win to Koloale after a Makuru's final penalty flew wide of the target.

The referees actions incensed Makuru players who along with their officials fronted up at the VIP lounge at Lawson Tama to remonstrate with match officials.

However, the tense situation was brought under control when SIFF president Martin Alufurai intervened and calmed Makuru players and officials.

Alufurai said the matter would be brought before the SIFF disciplinary committee to decide the fate of the two clubs.

Meanwhile, earlier Uncles defeated Kossa 2-1 in the play off for third place and secured the third prize and bronze medals.

Controversal it may be... but the fact remains that the Match Ref is known both locally and regionally for his very controversal decisions which usually resulted in MATCH DISPUTES...why did he
disallowed a goal and later after the Penalty Shoot-out allowed it again??!! This decision is very unprofessional and uncalled for from any ref. And what is going on between the Match Com and Ref
after the Shoot-out??? These actions of the ref are very suspious...let alone his biased decisions against one club. Why is the ref always officiate in matches involving Makuru FC...Can we have
other ref besides Moli. He is a man full of controversies. Enough of him and the Match Com who have interests in other clubs. He should stay away from influencing the ref after the game. Enough
of this biased officiating Moli and Faisi.

While I appreciate ur comments, I felt it is unfair to pick on a personality in this case Moli as the person in charge of the match yesterday. It was infact a collective decision by match
officials that Koloale was awarded 5-4 win in that match after the confusion earlier on. Needless to say, the goal was without doubt scored as seen on the video footage captured by One Television
and replayed using slow motion several times to ensure those who have doubts are able to overcome their doubts. I'm not suggesting here that the match officials had used the video footage to make
their decision, no. The matter should be put to rest and Koloale is the new champion.

I suggest that in higher national competition like this SIFF and Telekom should arrange for TV/Video coverage of the final so that when a dispute arises as to whether or not it was score, they
should just play the recorded video and use the slow motion type ia to be sure beyond any reasonable doubt whether it was a score or otherwise. But one problem I see in the standard of TV/video
taking here in SI is that, sometimes it's hard to distinguish between a normal play and slow motion as slow motion is sometimes seems to be faster than the normal play. Anyway, a food for thougth
for SIFF and any major event sponsor in the future to consider.

Well, I now note that TV One did cover the match. However, if the standard of the coverage could be improved so that it goes near to the AFL and NRL TV coverage type ia, bae hem very good and
will assist alot in the future competitions.

I think it is grossly unfair and inhuman to over-sensationalise let alone demonise someone for what was without doubt a mere human error. Obviously, atleast he as a person had the guts to under
take this rather unpleasent career where most if not the majority could have taken a hiding from the never ending abuse from fans. I bet who has the guts to take the field on that day to
officiate in that particular match. Not many I suppose!!!
Ok human as he is, who in his right would have thought that Moli could not succumb to human weakness/error.
    What ever theories
there are, but lets be concious and mindful of our duty to be human and not operators of Gas Chambers where one acts as jury and and excecutioner at the same time. Im not sure if God has given
anyone the right to take his place - JUDGE!!!!!!

I support Kausi on his suggestion for TV coverage of Grand Finals of NCC or other important competitions.

Better still, SIFF and their cronies or organising committees should engage

qualified OFC refs to officiate in the Finals to avoid complains of biaseness and favouritism. Seek OFC for any funds since the Winner of the NCC will compete in the O-League for World Cup CC.

This should be planned before hand by those responsible executives and not sit down and doing nothing.

Anyway, a rematch of the Finals should be a fair decision as the motto of FIFA
    tells
us. Otherwise there is no need for the FIFA flag and anthem at Lawson Tama because the SIFF is not Fair at all in its decisions.

Next NCC, just take in current league winners and
    not
losers and former champions who are just pulled in to the disadvantage of provincial reps. It is very clear favouritism

In the last ten minutes of the game, I witnessed some notable and strange actions and decisions which made me think that a reasonable person in his right mind would conclude that people involved
must be out of their minds.
First, the referee's decision to award the game to Koloale when he knew well that he already ruled out an ealier goal. Secondly, the games commissioner's decision
to approach the referee when the game was still on.
Although he denied instigating any influence on the referee's decision, his propensity speaks for itself. I am not surprised because the
games commissioner did challenge the officials of Makuru FC for a fight in one of their league games. During the super 8 semi finals, he ran for a hide after he found himself confronted by angry
    spectators for his unnecessary

I'm a Makuru fan as well but what disappoints me more than the controversy in the penalty shoot-out was the general discipline of one of the prominent national players - Alick Mamae. In my humble
opinion, had he excercised self control he wouldn't be red carded thus rendering him the oppotunity to be one of the penalty takers which by all indications - would have scored locking the score
at 5 a piece thereby neccecitating another 3 spot kicks. After that who knows what?????
As a national player he should have done better but he let his team and fans down when it mattered most.

The savage attck he made on Augustine was uncalled for, unsporting and does not reflect well of a national player who is supposed to be role a model.
Im utterly disappointed actually. Can I
beg of Alick to learn not to be too tempramental please????????

It's another sad judgement by the referee. We have seen in World Cup games a lot of controversial decisions by referees because they are prone to make mistakes and bad judgements. At the end of
the day, Blatter or FIFA cannot change any decision made by the referees. Whatever they say is final! Full Stop! We've seen that in the recent SPG when SI lost to NC, but that's the game! Makuru
is, without doubt, the strongest team in Solo because of the presence of at lot of national and key players. They fought for 120 minutes but cannot find the net. Had they scored goals earlier
they wouldn't have this complain. Koloale on the other hand lack the striking force. Thus because Makuru failed to score, they have to face this decision! It wouldn't be fair on Koloale as well
if the ref ruled otherwise! But that's the game we call "soccer"

Koloale is the best team on that day guys. They play constantly and they deserved it. The penalty Shot from jeffery Bule was a goal and every body except the ref saw it. He confused our national
    goal keeper.
The only problem here was the ref's decision. But koloale FC was the winner and there should not be any more complains.(to replay).
We should start supporting our new champion
for the up coming "O" league.
