SOLOMON OLYMPIC DREAM ON TRACK

Thursday, 06 March 08, 01:09 AM

LAUTOKA – Alick Maemae and Benjamin Totori produced an attacking master-class in pace and skill as Solomon Islands defeated Vanuatu 5-0 at Churchill Park, Lautoka, tonight.

Maemae and Totori were in unstoppable form with both Maemae and Totori getting doubles and Joses Nawo and Joachim Rande utilising their pace to give Vanuatu’s defence a torrid 90 minutes.

A red card for Geoffrey Lego Gete for a second yellow card left Vanuatu with everything to do; without the experienced Gete, Vanuatu were left in disarray at the back and with opponents like Maemae and Totori in top class form, Solomon Islands took full advantage.

Francois Sakama – unusually quiet in this tournament to date – was full of running and managed to get beyond the Solomon Islands defence but too often Vanuatu lacked accuracy in the top third of the pitch when it came to deliver a penetrating pass.

It was Vanuatu who created the best chances early on including one effort that cracked into Shadrock Ramoni’s crossbar before being cleared by Sale. Jeffry Nimanian and Joseph Namariau kept Solomon Islands defenders under close examination but just lacked the necessary sharpness in front of goal required to punish their opponents.

Solomon Islands though were only 1-0 up at halftime thanks to a fine strike from Alick Maemae who ghosted into the Vanuatu penalty area with a turn of pace before firing home a stinging shot past Yannick Merka on 39 minutes.

The goal settled Solomon Islands but Vanuatu were still in the match and Namariau nearly put Vanuatu level when he whipped in a clever shot with the outside of his right boot to Shedrock Ramoni’s near post forcing Ramoni to make an awkward forward lunge to block the shot.

Totori made it 2-0 in the 55th minute after striking home a wonderful shot past substitute goalkeeper Charley Kalnasei. Only moments later Gete was sent off and Totori had added Solomon Islands third goal after a neat one-two with Maemae left Vanuatu’s reconfigured defence in tatters before Totori added a neat finish to make it 3-0 on 62 minutes.

Joses Nawo – who had been wasteful in front of goal throughout the first half – made amends with the fourth goal in the 73rd minute and Maemae completed the scoring from a free-kick after 75 minutes.

One talking point will be why Solomon islands coach Luke Eroi did not choose to rest Maemae and Totori prior to the match with New Zealand. Eroi, however, will be delighted with the performance and the goals that place Solomon Islands in a good position ahead of Match Day 4.

Nelson Sale marshalled the Solomon Islands defence competently and looked far more assured than he did in the opening match. Speculation about whether Solomon Islands will cope with the mercurial Costa Barbarouses on Friday’s exciting showdown with New Zealand suggests Solomon Islands will manage.

Where Solomon Islands could face issues is if they are up against the powerful figure of Sam Messam. Messam’s height, power, and technique – not too mention his never-say-die attitude – could pose Nelson Sale and his defence plenty of problems.

New Zealand meet Solomon Islands on Match Day 4 with the team that wins all but sealing qualification for the Beijing Olympics. A draw would take qualification to Match Day 5 with New Zealand scheduled to face Cook Islands and Solomon Islands up against host nation Fiji.

Congratulations Solo and Vanuatu. It was a great game... it was sad for the red card but that is part of the game... The tournament hasn't finish yet...The two last games is very cruisial for
solo... Stay calm and have a good rest before the game with nz.. Remember nz is under more pressure than. Remember the All blacks were favourates during 2007 rugby world cup but they even did not
make it to the finals....the same could happen here.. ole oleo ole ole... Go Solo go...Go Kiwi go... Let the best team wins...

    Classic! simply awesome.

It is unfortunate that FA Officials are not here to witness players like Totori, Maemae, Ramoni, Nale to name a few. These players are second to no one and in my

opinion are better then some FA players.

I urge Ocenia to produce DVD and promote Ocenia players to europe. Such a talent is hidden and are not given proper market and exposure.

Once again like we say in Fiji - "sa mate kina lavo" trans - worth paying for my ticket. Solomans have trilled the crowd and most were amazed and enjoyed an excting game of football.

    To
my friend "The Whale from Honiara" your coutrymen are simply the best. Their discipline all round is O.K. They were cautioned twice but I guess it was marginal.

    My kids also
    enjoyed the
game and we also cheered on Soloman and will be doing the same through out.

It is very good result for the Solympics. Maemae and Totori are in good form upfront and Sale and gang are best in the defence. Stay focus for the NZ game.

Congratulations to Solo for their performance. 2 more games to create history in OFC.
Totori is the best islands players at the moment, OFC should assist in finding same professionals clubs
for OFC top players to trial like African Conferedation did few years ago and now we can see the fruits of their works with many African players such as Eto, Essien, Drogba...dominating european
    competitions.

OFC should make a Team ( Selection ) of OFC best players and tour Europe for test games to give opportunity to OFC players to show their talents to European Clubs.
    With all talented players we

have in OFC, I'm sure we can impress more than one club.

Solo seems to have bad mentality against themselves when comes to important games like the one with NZ tomorrow. Hope, this will not the case this time around. All the best Solympics.

That was awsome!Congradulations boys.Keep the fighting spirit on and fight to the last bit.I am proud of your down to earth personality having accepted the offer where a lot of elites like Molea
considered to be worthless. Many Solomon Islanders lost hope in soccer after the ahrd time last year, but you guys actually shopwed them that there is always sunshine after the rain.Keep on
    trusting.

I most certainly agree with Nuweavan, we need to show case these talent in one form or another.

Taking europe tour or we could invite top europe clubs to play freindlies here.

    BUT
WE NEED TO DO SOMETHING, PRACTICALLY RATHER THEN SIT DOWN AND MAKE POLICIES

OFC needs to assist Island nation in pursuing international exposure to be able to match with other

confedrations that of America and Asia.

I urge Soloman Football Association not to ruin such talent in your backyard. If Ocenia can not do much look for other option to make way for
your players to play in europe. The reason why I continue to mention europe, because soccer in NZ and Australia is O.K but not so much priority compared with euro.

Without a doubt, Solomon Islands were the best team in the tournament at the moment. The only daunting task is the next two games which are yet to be played. Remember that the road to Beijing is
still a long way ahead. Overconfiden
