SOLOMONS GO DOWN FIGHTING IN BEACH WORLD CUP OPENER

Friday, 18 July 08, 09:08 AM

Italy exhausted a courageous effort from Solomon Islands to win 7-4 in what proved a fitting curtain-raiser to Marseille 2008.

Paolo Palmacci shone for the Europeans, while Gibson Hosea's brace kept the Bilikiki Boys in contention before he was sent off.

The Italians made an explosive start, scoring twice inside the first 71 seconds courtesy of Palmacci and Simone Feudi. James Naka halved the deficit, but Francesco Corosoniti's thunderous volley and a Giusepe Soria strike sent the Azzurri in 4-1 up at the first break. It was 6-4 by the end of the second period, Roberto Pasquali and Giuseppe Condorelli on target for the Italians.

The final 12 minutes proved tight, with and own goal completing the scoring and ensured that Italy went straight to the top of Group A.

Solomon Islands goalscorer James Naka was resolute in defeat.

"It was a very hard game. Although we lost I'm not too disappointed, because Italy are a really good team. It was a great honour to play in the World Cup, and I was really proud to represent my country and my island. It's our ambition to reach the second round and we still believe we can do this."

Italian player Diego Maradona - son of the World Cup winning Argentinian legend - was wrought with emotion after the final whistle.

"This was a very special day for me. I was so emotional to represent Italy, it was very important to me to do this for my mother. I'm still learning beach soccer and I enjoyed today very much, but the most important thing is that Italy win. My dream is for an Italy-Argentina final."

In the groups other match Portugal cruised to an 8-2 win over El Salvador

Good effort boys. You are playing your part and I think you did great.
No friendly matches must be one of the contributing factors to this defeat.
Wish you best in the two remaining
    matches.

    Good job boys.
The boys were physically fit but not match fit. Meaning that they could not settle down early but later in the game.
Small as it may seem but that in my oppinion was the
telling factor. No blame game here but it would have been very nice to have as much match game time to properly condition the boys before the tournament. Anyway circumstances dictate situations
so we just have to take note & improve more on planning next time.
Focus on the next game and do the best you can cos that is all we can ask of you. You have already done us proud so keep
    flying.

Cheers and best wishes to you in your game againts Portugal.

Go Bilikiki go Solo go Oceania go

Great effort Bilikiki,, I watch the game last night and there are some commend which affects the pacifc boys. First, they didnt settle in quickly in the first half which create chances for Italy

to out shoot them, next and the most important thing is shooting, the islanders have alot of chances in the second half which they might equalise if they give more shoots to the goal.

Italy's shoots are perfect though the solo defenders put them at bay in the second half but their shoots even from the middle are rocket. If solomon can give more shoots last night they might

equalise or even win cos the match was evenly played.

Lastly, Naka did a great job but he made some unnecessary over head kick. There is one incidence which his over kick missed the
ball & land on the Italian chest. Anyway great job and good luck on the next game

Christianoronaldo your english is pathetic and you don't sound like someone from Portugal. Why would someone from Portugal want to comment about Solomon Islands or Bilikiki for that matter?

It's a suspect that we might be aging and slowing down a bit(how's the condition guys) and not focussing well. Defence organisation need to improve especially in the counter offensive.Good
display by the young inputs in Muri, Hosea and Rence. Try and stay away from fouls and defensive errors. Otherwise I am still hoping for a win n the remaining matches. Watch out for the very rich
    hotel foods.

it was courages effort that has enabled us to be strongly considered in the other matches!!

i strongly believe that a little money could have gone a long way though!! a few matches with
say the likes of vanuatu and new zealand should have occured!! if they had, i believe that our confidence would have been much higher and our game would have more stuctured!!

    i guess its a
    lack of money!!

    anyways,
the best of luck to our team in their remaining matches!!

    go solo go!!

No competitive warm up matches was the main factor.

They will improve in their next coming games.

    Wish them good luck

I watched the match and would like to contribute the following:

The match was evenly fought though the Romans had the upperhand at times.

Solomons had to encounter three unfortunate

    events:
    1. the penalty
    2. the sending off of Hosea
    3. the own goal by Omokirio

    Despite those difficult circumstances they
still managed to score four goals and held the
Italians to just seven thereby cutting the deficite to less than harlf. This is great achievement. Infact in the second period the Solos scored
more goals than the Italians and in the the
last period they managed to hold off the Italians and the later managed to win that period through an own goal by the Solos. This is indeed
    marvelous.

    Now imagine if those 3
unfortunate events had not occured. The Solos could have won the match, I have no doubt about that.

Lets see how the islanders do 2nite.
