WANTOK CUP HONIARA 2008 - SOLOMON ISLANDS NAME 64-MAN SQUAD

Thursday, 19 June 08, 12:09 PM

HONIARA - Solomon Islands Football Federation (SIFF) has named an enlarged 64-man squad for the forthcoming Wantok Cup competition to be played during the Solomon Islands Anniversary week celebrations.

Solomon Islands has not played a full international since September 2007's shock XIII South Pacific Games defeat to Vanuatu in Apia.

With the opportunity to play international matches so rare since being eliminated from the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa Oceanian Zone Qualifiers, SIFF will enter two teams to ensure their domestic-based players gain as much experience on the international stage as possible.

The 64 players will be divided into two teams - Solomon Islands A and Solomon Islands B - for the purposes of development.

Successful Kossa FC coach Jacob Moli and his assistant Moses Toata will take the reins of Solomon Islands B with Solympic coach Luke Eroi and his assistant Masuaku Valere Rex in charge of Solomon  Islands A.

Vanuatu will be favoured to turn in a strong performance following its two recent 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa Oceanian Zone Qualifiers against New Caledonia.

Papua New Guinea has not played a full international since July last year when it lost 2-1 to Solomon Islands at Lawson Tama Stadium. Prior to that match, Papua New Guinea had not played any type of international football at senior level since 2004 when it beat Samoa 4-1 in an OFC Nations Cup match.

One notable name missing from the Solomon Islands squad list is that of Portland Timbers striker Benjamin Totori who recently left New Zealand Football Championship (NZFC) and Oceania Football Confederation (OFC) champions Waitakere United for the American A League.

Another surprise absentee is former Youngheart Manawatu midfielder Alick Maemae. Maemae played three seasons in the NZFC before returning to the Solomon Islands domestic football late last year.

The lightening quick and talented Maemae blotted his copybook in his last two international appearances for both the senior international team in Samoa and Solympics U-23 international team in Fiji when he was red carded in big matches against New Caledonia and New Zealand.

Maemae was also red carded at the National Clubs Championship recently and the view shared by local observers is that a rest on the sidelines will allow the player to review his disciplinary problem.

Veteran striker Batram Suri has left Solomon Islands to take up a short term contract with Ferrymead Bay in New Zealand and is also unavailable.

Solomon Islands international players based in Australia and New Zealand such as George Suri, Henry Fa'arodo and Stanley Waita have been overlooked for selection in favour of blooding more locally based talent.

The four team competition which will feature Solomon Islands A and Solomon Islands B, Papua New Guinea and Vanuatu in a tournament reminiscent of the now defunct Melanesian Cup.

The Melanesian Cup was first played for in 1988 with Fiji winning five titles, Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands and Vanuatu all winning one.

Vanuatu should reconsider sending it national team to compete against the Solomons, instead it should consider more tougher oponents outside the region such as Itlay, England, Argentina and
    Brazil.

They have nothing to gain from playing the Solomon Islands cos they have already beaten them both in the 5 a side and the 11 a side codes.

I am delighted that SIFF had not rested back knowing that they don't have any international match around they opted to continue to develop football out there - Good thinking and full marks.

May the very best come out of this competition and bear fruits of development similar to Futsal acheivements for Solomons.

I have always encouraged development programme and SIFF had
    takent he right step forward.

    All the best.

Hey Mr squid.. Are you telling the forum that Naka,Takayama, Luwi,Muri,Koto,etc..will never play again for Kossa FC, Koloale FC and even the full strength solomon team?
    Your argument is
stupid...Those players you mentioned above will still join their respective football club in honiara when they come back and for you to have a strong national team, you have to include people
like Omokiri, Naka,Takayam Etc.. Your national soccer team depends entirely on them..
Use your head..Mr squid from the ocean..

i think those players you are refering to are on important duties overseas. The wantok cup is not that important, so you can pick tom, dick, harry to represent the team. If it is
important then the players overseas will join your team and even the beach soccer boys will also mix the code that mr squid does not want any body to mix. Hem olsem ya..

It will take another 4 years to qualify for world cup qualifying, therefore the Wantok Cup will develop a execellence where can indentify players for the next qualifiers that would be in 2011 in
Noumea, still a long road......thats where we are heading, them i am with it...

Well I am not opposing Squid on this ones, but in Brazil from my knowledge, they started off playing futsal, street soccer, beach soccer, when they reach the age of 16 - 17 age thats when they
decide which code....It was in this small sided games they develop their skills.I beleive in 4 to 5 years time there will be a change for football in the outdoor soccer, especially if whe the
players in the junior football goes outdoor. Well for beach, we do not have a league ye but I think we are getting there one day.....with the mix I think I don't see anything wrong with it...

I have watched documentries of Robinho, Ronaldo, Bebeto, the Brazilians, where the country is the spiritual home of football, they said they develop their skills from small sided games. Well they
are living testimonies for other players.

Vannysolo pliz read properly. I am not saying that they will not play again for their respective clubs when they return. I am saying that they will not feature in the national team during the
wantok cup as they will be away on another national duty. And this is and will always be a problem for any national coach of any national team when you are betting on the same players who will be
involved in more than one discipline or when there are clashes in tournament dates. This is very true for Solo when our mentality gets distracted so easily. This is the reason why we have not
been doing well in the bigger numbered 11-a-side as opposed to the small sided games. I bet you that one day criss-crossing of codes will be regulated in the same way as player transfer or
release nowadays and when that happens squid will come and live on dry land.

After having paitence for all these while, I can say only one thing, thank GOD we have SEA dividing us.
Things have got out of hand here. African states are so united when in
football, they don't downplay nor they undermine fellow neigbours and the same goes for Europe.
We are still far behind but yet we are very good to belittle each other.
    Solomons and Vanuatu

    Ronaldiniho,

I think you are really really nostalgic!! You are always referring to the Solomon's loss to Vanuatu in the Apia 2007 SPG in this forum? Are you mentally retarded?

    Read
this: In the Pool games, a full strength Solomon side defeated Vanuatu 2 goals to nil. In the 3rd place play-off, a weakened Solomon side lost to Vanuatu on the same scoreline. What is the net
    effect here?

If Ronaldiniho mentions this stupid issue one more time in this forum, or in any other online forum for that matter, then he is definitely mentally retarded and
    stupid.

    Cheers from Honiara
