Spanish Football Federation

The Spanish Football Federation (also known as Real Federación Española de Fútbol or RFEF) is the governing body of football in Spain, and organizers of Primera División, Segunda División, and Segunda División B of La Liga. It also oversees the Copa Del Rey, SuperCopa de Espana and the Spanish National Team. The organization is based in Las Rozas, a suburb of Madrid, Spain.

At the beginning of the twentieth century, football in Spain was unorganized as individual teams organized games and competitions. The Spanish Football Federation was stated in 1902, after football competitions were held to mark King Alfred’s coming of age. Representatives from different teams came together in Madrid to create the federation. They came up with the Cameponato de Copa, The Champions Cup, which is a prestigious football competition amongst Spanish teams. From the period of 1910 till 1913 the organization split into two different unions, The Spanish Federation of Football Club, and Club’s Union. It was not until 1913 that the RFEF was officially formed and became part of the FIFA.

The success of the Spanish National Team during the 1920’s in the Olympic Games made football more popular in Spain. As a result more teams joined the Spanish Football Federation. A professional football league named La Liga was created in 1928, by Jose Maria Acha director of Arenas Club de Getxo, after the Spanish Football Federation agreed on the ten teams that would form the new league. In 1954 the Spanish Football Federation joined up with UEFA.

Currently, the Spanish Football Federation is one of the most prestigious federations in the world. It governs such legendary teams as Real Madrid and FC Barcelona. Ángel María Villar is currently presiding over the RFEF.
