Klagenfurt Stadium Overview

The brand new Klagenfurt Worthersee Stadium stadium holds 32,000 fans and was built over the coarse of 20 months. The stadium is located on a scenic site between the city of Klagenfurt and the banks of Lake Wörthersee. It will be one of the host stadiums for the UEFA EURO 2008. The locals of the city nicknamed the stadium "UFO", due to its compact and unique design.

Klagenfurt Worthersee Stadium is multifunctional stadium and was modeled according to the St. Jakob-Park in Basel, it is part of the Sportpark Klagenfurt and was completed in September 2007, replacing a previous arena on the site demolished in November 2006. For the 2007/08 season Worthersee Stadion was home to the newly-formed Bundesliga side SK Austria Kärnten.

Klagenfurt is beautifully located at the base of stunning mountain peaks, surrounded by green meadows and has the warmest Alpine lake in all of Europe, the Worthersee. The city has a rich Italian influence when it comes to the architecture. You will find courtyards and squares so charming and picturesque, you would think you were back in Italy.

There is also a strong cultural presence with galleries, museums and theatres. On the Worthersee, there is a wonderful lakeside stage where you can take in a great work of art, while being on the edge of this beautiful lake.

Klagenfurt is known for hosting spectacular events, so hosting the 2008 UEFA EURO will come easy to this community. They have had the Beach Volleyball Grand Slap, the Ironman Triathlon and Big Air Snowboarding competitions.

The new stadium that is being built, Klagenfurt Worthersee-Stadion, is modeled after St. Jakob’s Park in Basel. This new venue will also have a hotel, shopping center and some business facilities. Three matches will be held at the new stadium.

Football Fans who cannot find a suitable hotel, or who would rather stay in a private room, can quickly find the right accommodation close to any of the Euro 2008 venues in both Austria and Switzerland.

CD-Cafe-Bar Pankraz, 8. Mai-Straße 16, Tel. 516675, - a nice place to have coffee in the afternoon and to hang out with friends in the evening. Has alternative music, DJs in on the weekends (hip hop, house, funk, dnb, reggae) and readings on a regular base.

Discothek Bollwerk is one of the few large clubs in Klagenfurt, located in the city periphery. Very loud and commercial techno is played, and the guests are somewhat more rustic than in the clubs in the city center. Alcoholic drinks are very cheap. Gerberweg 46.

Food and Restaurants

Stalls serve traditional Austrian cuisine in the indoor part of Klagenfurt's market. Main courses cost 3-6 €.

Kleeblatt, St. Veiter Ring 31, Tel. 502174. The owner's philosophy is to cook simple, honest dishes using high quality ingredients from local farmers. Most classical Austrian dishes are on the menu. The Wiener Schnitzel is highly recommended. Main courses cost 5-12 €.

Hirter Botschaft, Bahnhofstrasse 44, Tel. 54 44 40 - offers the locally brewed Hirter bier (beer). Serves traditional austrian and carinthian cuisine. (close to the train station)

Klagenfurt Travel Tips

By plane
Klagenfurt Airport has scheduled flights from Berlin-Tegel, Köln - Bonn, Frankfurt-Hahn, Frankfurt-Main, Hamburg, Hannover, Leipzig and Vienna.

By train
Since Klagenfurt is located at a railway gateway to Italy, Slovenia and Germany, it can be easily reached by any bigger Austrian city. There are hourly connections to Vienna,Graz and neighbouring Villach.

Get around

Most sights of interest can be easily reached by walking around. However, Klagenfurt has an extensive bus system. Tickets can be bought on the bus and cost around € 4,00 for a 24h ticket, or €0,90 for a single ride. The main bus hub is located at Heiligengeistplatz in the center of the city.

A bicycle is recommended if you wish to travel to Klagenfurt's beach, on the shore of the Woerthersee in the Western outskirts of the city. There is a cycle path along the Lendkanal, taking you from Heiligengeistplatz to the beach and continuing along the northern shore of the Woerthersee all the way to Velden. Bikes can be hired at Heiligengeistplatz.
