OFC U-17 Championship 1989
The third edition of the OFC U-17 Championship took place in 1989 and doubled as qualifying for the 1989 FIFA U-16 World Championship™ in Scotland. The tournament was hosted in Australia, who won their third consecutive OFC U-17 Championship title by finishing with the most points in a round-robin format.
Australia were drawn into an extremely difficult group at the 1989 FIFA U-16 World Championship but they fought hard despite the opposition. Up against East Germany in their opening match Australia suffered a 1-0 defeat before Brazil handed them a second. After going down 2-0 against the United States in their final group match, Australia showed plenty of fight, scoring two goals in two minutes to secure a draw to end the tournament on a positive note.
