With a knee injury sidelining Rojas, his place in the squad is taken by Fallon – who linked with the English League One side last week after leaving Scottish Premier League side St Johnstone.
Fallon, who has four goals in 17 All Whites appearances, scored for the New Zealand side in November’s home FIFA World Cup intercontinental playoff loss to Mexico in Wellington.
All Whites interim coach Neil Emblen says although it is unfortunate Rojas will miss the Japan match, the decision has been made with an eye on long term.
“While it’s disappointing for Marco that he can’t be involved this time, it gives him the opportunity to get himself fit and back on the
field as fast as possible. That is the most important thing for Marco’s career and for the All Whites,” Emblen said.
“Rory now gets an opportunity in what is an important fixture for us and for Japan in their World Cup preparations.”
The international friendly between the All Whites and Japan is on Wednesday 5 March at the National Olympic Stadium in Tokyo.
Kickoff is 11.40pm (NZ time).
