The Suva Futsal Association and Futsal League are the brainchild of a number of enthusiastic national futsal team players.
The players’ initiative has received the full backing of the Fiji FA which will sanction and fund the eight-team tournament set to run for 24 weeks from 9 May.
Fiji FA competitions manager Amitesh Pal says the futsal court at the Fiji Football Academy in Suva has been newly refurbished for the start of the tournament.
“Thanks to FIFA, which fully funded the project, we replaced the concrete flooring with a new rug surface just in time for the competition.”
Pal says Fiji FA is hoping the new competition will help to improve the standards in Fiji and it will contribute to the development of the national team.
“We are hoping that this will give an impetus for the growth of the game.
“The national futsal team’s status in the region is still nowhere near the likes of the Solomon Islands or New Zealand.” he says
“Hopefully it will inspire some young players to play futsal and that can be only good for the game.”
Pal says Suva is the second futsal association in Fiji.
“It’s exciting times for Futsal, we have another association on different island in Lambasa.
“We will do everything we can to ensure that we build on this momentum,” Pal says.
“I’m confident that with our support both the Suva Futsal league and the Suva Futsal League will flourish.”
