Ernie Merrick’s side will provide a solid test for Ramon Tribulietx’s squad ahead of the new league campaign and will bring a strong pool of players to Auckland next month.
Top drawer talent like Costa Rican striker Kenny Cunningham and compatriot Carlos Hernandez, All Whites stars Andrew Durante, Jeremy Brockie and former navy blues skipper Ben Sigmund may all feature on the hallowed turf.
Auckland City’s General Manager Terry Kennelly is excited by the prospect of welcoming the Phoenix to Kiwitea Street.
“We are all really looking forward to our warm up match against Wellington Phoenix before our ASB Premiership campaign begins,” Kennelly says.
“The Wellington Phoenix have a strong squad, packed with international players and they will provide a great test for our players.
“I am sure both sets of supporters as well as the football community in general will be keen to fill Kiwitea Street and take in such a high profile game before the serious league business gets underway.”
It will be the first time the Nix first team has visited Kiwitea Street since the capital-based club was founded in 2007.
The last occasion that the two clubs met competitively was in the Phoenix Challenge in 2012 when Auckland City FC prevailed 3-1 courtesy of a double by Emiliano Tade and one from defender Dan Saric. Tobias Bertsch scored for the Phoenix ‘A’.
The first clash between Auckland City FC and Wellington Phoenix ‘A’ ended in a 1-1 draw in January 2011.
The Wellington Phoenix last match with one of the Super City’s two footballing powers saw them thrash then OFC champions Waitakere United 7-0 at Trusts Stadium prior to the FIFA Club World Cup in 2008.
