Samoana’s varsity side defeated the Faga’itua Vikings in the title match to earn back-to-back triumphs during the 2011-2012 school year while their junior varsity squad completed the season with the best record to claim their second title.
There are six schools participating in the varsity competition for the 2012-2013 school year while just three will take part in the junior varsity division.
Competing in the varsity bracket are the Sharks, Vikings, Fa’asao-Marist Crusaders, Tafuna Warriors, Nu’uuli Voc-Tech Wildcats and South Pacific Academy Dolphins.
The Sharks, Warriors and Vikings are the only squads who will turn out in the junior varsity division.
Kickoff for the season openers is at 8am on January 12 with the Sharks taking on the Warriors in junior action while Faga’itua plays Nu’uuli Voc-Tech at Pago Park in the varsity division.
The tournament is Football Federation American Samoa’s first of the 2013 calendar year with further high school competitions such as the girl’s futsal and the boy’s 11-a-side scheduled to begin in March.
“This competition is possible because of our great relationship with the Department of Education (DOE) and especially the athletics department run by Tumua Matu’u,” FFAS president Iuli Alex Godinet says.
“So we’re very thankful to them for working with us to include our sport in their yearly sporting curriculum calendar.”
For the junior varsity division, all three teams will play in a round-robin format consisting of three rounds, with the team with the best record at the end of play set to be crowned as champions. The third round is scheduled to end on the first week of February.
As for the varsity division, the top four teams at the end of the season advance to the play-offs which are scheduled for the last week of February.
“This is a very critical competition for us because we are using it to select players to represent American Samoa at the U-17 and U-20 international competitions in 2014,” FFAS CEO Tavita Taumua says.
Games will be held every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday of each week for the next two months.
