Rule joined referee Kim Sang Woo of Korea Republic and fellow assistant referee Paul Cetrangolo of Australia in Sapporo for the match between Japan and Uruguay.

Rule will also officiate Japan’s next friendly match with Venezuela.
The New Zealander was part of a trio of Oceania match officials at the FIFA World Cup™ that included compatriots Peter O’Leary and Jan Hendrik Hintz.
Rule replaced Ravinesh Kumar after the Fijian match official suffered an injury prior to the competition.
The Kiwi trio officiated the match between Nigeria and Bosnia in which the African side prevailed 1-0 thanks to a Peter Odemwinge scored the winner.
Tahiti’s Norbert Hauata also represented Oceania at the same tournament.
