Puaikura walked away with the championship title for the Premier Men’s competition after dominating a penalty shoot-out in the final against Takuvaine at CIFA Complex, Matavera on Saturday.
Striker Vou Williams won Takuvaine the early lead with a goal in the 18th minute, but an attempt from Puaikura right-winger and Cook Island youth international Dwayne Tiputoa equalised the game only six minutes later. Both teams battled to take the lead but the full time whistle blew with a 1-1 draw.
A missed Takuvaine attempt and a brilliant save by the Puaikura goalkeeper left the final score at 5-3 after penalty shoot-outs.
Tupapa Maraerenga dominated the age-group leagues, winning the finals for U-8 mixed, U-11 mixed, and both U-14 girls and boys.
Nikao Sokattak were also successful throughout the leagues, winning the finals for both the U-17 men and the senior women.
The talent and competition showcased in the pre-season competitions is a true indicator of the high quality of football across ages and clubs in the Cook Islands.
