The OFC Nations Cup is Oceania’s qualifying tournament for the FIFA Confederations Cup, and also acts as Stage 2 of the 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia™ Qualifiers.
New Caledonia came within one goal of becoming the first Pacific Island team to qualify for a senior FIFA event outside of New Zealand or former OFC member Australia, but were beaten to the honour by Tahiti.
Sardo says in order to better their efforts of four years ago, the side needs to start preparing sooner rather than later.
“It’s a rather large list, with players who have been starters with their respective clubs this season,” Sardo explains.
“We have our eye on them, it’s up to each individual to do what they need to secure their place in the squad. The start of next season will also be important. The door will remain open.”
New Caledonia have been drawn in the same group as the defending champions Tahiti, where they are both joined by Papua New Guinea and Stage 1 winners Samoa.
The OFC Nations Cup is scheduled to take place from 28 May to 11 June 2016 in Papua New Guinea.
