OFC President David Chung says he is pleased to have Lai on board.
“William Lai has a wealth of business experience as well as a lengthy background in Solomon Islands football development,” Chung says.
“His inclusion on the OFC Executive Committee will be of tremendous benefit not only to Solomon Islands football, but to the region as a whole as he shares his expertise and knowledge with us all.”
The position was previously held by former chairman of the SIFF Normalisation Committee Barnabas Anga, who was elected following the 23rd OFC Ordinary Congress held in Papua New Guinea in January.
Lai is the current Honiara Football Association president and has spent the last 30 years involved in Solomon Islands football, an extra-curricular activity which compliments his successful business interests.
His appointment to the OFC Executive Committee was made in Zurich ahead of the 65th FIFA Congress which saw incumbent FIFA President Joseph S. Blatter re-elected for a fifth term in office.
Lai attended the 51st FIFA Congress held in Paris, France in 1998 representing SIFF, when President Blatter was first elected to office.
