A transfer agreement has been reached with Smeltz’s current club Gold Coast United and the 28-year-old has travelled to Ankara to undergo a medical and finalise discussions on a two-year deal.
The moves comes just weeks after Smeltz made an ill-fated switch to China. He spent only a few days at his new club before realising he would struggle to settle into the environment and returning back to Australia.
“Naturally, we will be sorry to see Shane go but we are pleased that he may now be able to pursue his dream of playing with a major overseas club,” said Gold Coast chief executive Clive Mensink.
“He has been the subject of constant transfer speculation since he returned from China but to his credit has remained focused on his job at Gold Coast United.”
Smeltz, who scored for New Zealand in a 1-1 draw with Italy at the FIFA World Cup South Africa 2010, finished last season as the top scorer in the A-League with 19 goals.
