Leaving the sunny shores of Tahiti for the colder climates of Brittany in western France, the side was greeted by a Pontivy outfit with the same objective – and the home advantage.
Tefana were optimistic of their chances going into the match, despite taking on a side who play in a division of a substantially higher standard, but were eventually downed 5-1.
Behind by just two goals going into the break, the Polynesians conceded three more in the second half before being jolted into life following Pontivy’s fifth in the 58th minute.
Having shored up their defence, Tefana were able to restore some of their pride thanks to an 80th-minute strike from Angelo Tchen.
But it wasn’t enough and the side which is currently sitting second on the Ligue Mana table is now out of the running for a spot in the group stage of the Europa League – the prize that will be awarded to the eventual winner of the Coupe de France.
