Malaita is now the second qualifier from Pool B behind Honiara after the team from the capital ground out a 1-0 win over Makira Ulawa on Sunday.
Unfortunately for Honiara, star winger Jack Wetney was red carded in the second half against Makira and is now banned from playing in both the semifinal match and final, should Honiara win through.
Today’s Pool B action rounded out the final four qualifiers after the Guadalcanal Hornets and Choiseul province won through in their final group matches.
The Guadalcanal Hornets hit their straps in their last group match as they thrashed Central Province 7-2 on Saturday.
The win takes Guadalcanal to eight points after four matches, capping off an impressive campaign for a side that is dominated by young players.
Their record of two wins, two draws and no losses will be a major confidence boost as they progress to the second round. By comparison Choiseul Province had to grind their way into the second placing in Pool A with a 2-0 win over Western Province earlier on Monday.
The semifinals are scheduled for Wednesday and in what will be a day of highly competitive football as the teams fight for seats in the grand final. The grand final itself is scheduled for Saturday.
