Chief guest Fiji Sun Newspaper Limited Chief Executive Officer Peter Lomas officially opened the 2010 League season before Lautoka sent out a warning to all other participating clubs with a clinical display against Nadi.
The 2010 O-League representatives led 1-0 at the break after defender Samuela Kautoga nodded in the first goal on 35 minutes from a Marika Madigi corner kick.
Nadi gained momentum in the second spell and equalised through Bimal Naidu in the 49th minute but the celebration was short lived as Lautoka woke up to begin their rampage.
Striker Osea Vakatalesau and midfielder Alvin Avinesh guided Lautoka’s come back while Fiji Football Association 2009 footballer of the year Kamal Hassan scored a brace of goals.
Lautoka coach Imdad Ali says the huge victory was a perfect start to their season.
“It was a good start for us and I would like to thank my boys for their effort and the supporters for coming out in numbers. The first game in any competition is always hard to win but we’re pleased to maintain our winning streak,” Ali said.
Lautoka maintained an unbeaten 18 match unbeaten run in the National Football League last year.
Nadi coach Lambert Sarju says his players failed to maintain their high standards.
“We came back in the match after we were down 1-0. There was a lapse in concentration in our defence after we were down and Lautoka increased their lead. Despite the loss I’m happy with how my boys performed and we will bounce back,” Sarju said.
