For the first time in the confederation’s history, all 11 OFC member associations entered and were involved in the qualifying process for FIFA Women’s World Cup 2027™ in Brazil.

The qualification process was also split into three stages – the longest route to the global finals used in Oceania before – and kicked off between the four lowest-ranked nations in the Cook Islands. American Samoa made history in the very-first game of the qualifiers, Cassidy Pamela Drago scoring twice in their maiden senior international women’s win – a 3-0 victory over Tahiti.

They followed it up with a 4-0 win over the Cook Islands to book their spot in the second round, the first time American Samoa had progressed past the first stage of qualifying for either a senior men’s or women’s World Cup.

Round 2 of the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2027™ Oceania Qualifiers saw American Samoa join the remaining seven member associations in two groups of four, with the top two in either group advancing to the sem-finals. The fairytale continued for American Samoa, who stunned OFC Women’s Nations Cup holders the Solomon Islands, and defeated neigbours Samoa for the first time to advance from Group A. Meanwhile, New Zealand topped the group with three wins from three and 19 unanswered goals.

The winners of the previous qualifying tournament for 2023, Papua New Guinea, secured safe passage to the semi-finals from Group B, recording convincing wins over both Vanuatu and New Caledonia. Group hosts Fiji joined them in the last four with victories over the same two opponents. That set up a decisive clash on the final day of action to decide top spot in Group B, and the opportunity to avoid New Zealand in the semi-finals. A late winner from Meagen Gunemba proved enough for the PNG Bilums to edge Fiji 1-0 and claim top spot with nine points.

The third and final stage saw the semi-finals and final played in New Zealand, with the winner securing direct qualification for FIFA Women’s World Cup 2027™ in Brazil. The Football Ferns maintained their impressive form with a dominant 5-0 victory over Fiji in their first home fixture for over a year, whilst Papua New Guinea joined them in the qualifying final by cutting American Samoa’s fairytale run short.

Despite bossing territory, chances, and possession, New Zealand were frustrated for long stages by Papua New Guinea in the final at North Harbour Stadium in Auckland. Ultimately all it took was one goal from Katie Kitching to book their World Cup tickets in a 1-0 victory – sending them to their seventh FIFA Women’s World Cup and sixth in a row.

Papua New Guinea still have a second chance to qualify through the intercontinental play-offs later in 2026.
