The Fiji U-19 women’s team has started its preparations for the OFC U-19 Women’s Championship which is scheduled to kick-off in the Cook Islands next month.

The Sunil Kumar coached side got their campaign underway with trials, which were held several weeks ago, with the selected squad now taking part in camps which will be held on the weekend to cater to the players’ school schedules.

“We have started our preparation with weekend camps as most girls are students and need time for their studies,” he said.

“This is our first camp together and it’s a chance to analyse the status of the girls altogether. We will be having weekend camps and our final camp will be held in the two weeks of school break.

“The girls have been participating weekly in the Vodafone U-16 Youth League and they all look fit and we are just working on building their combination,” he continued.

“Six of our U-19 girls are in Samoa with the national team and we have 19 girls here today (Saturday).

The side is drawn in Group A with host Cook Islands, Solomon Islands and Vanuatu while Group B will see American Samoa, New Zealand, Samoa and Tahiti. Group C is made up of Papua New Guinea, New Caledonia and Tonga.

The OFC U-19 Women’s Championship will be held from 30 August to 12 September.
