Through a joint partnership and advocacy campaign with OFC and the Just Play programme, UNICEF has invited over 400 students from local west Auckland schools to experience the award winning Just Play programme in action.
Over 400 children from 8 primary schools will be present at the sports day taking part in Just Play activities.
UNICEF NZ Ambassador Amber Peebles will MC the event and Alfred Ngaro (National MP) will speak on behalf of Social Development Minister, Hon Anne Tolley.
OFC representatives including Franck Castillo and President David Chung as well as UNICEF Pacific and UNICEF New Zealand representatives will also speak at the event.
The OFC President’s Cup is an invitational tournament bringing together teams from three football regions: the Oceania Football Confederation (OFC), the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) and the Confederation of North, Central American and Caribbean Association Football in North America and Central America (CONCACAF).
The Just Play Sports Day is an opportunity to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child – the most widely and rapidly ratified human rights instrument in history.
Just Play is a sport for development programme aiming to improve the lives of children and society more broadly. Just Play uses football as the tool to focus on health and wellbeing, gender equality, social inclusion for all children, and keeping children safe.
The programme is recognised as the leading sport for development programme in the Pacific with plans now underway to roll it out in New Zealand.
So far the programme has reached over 150,000 children, trained 2,741 community volunteers and teachers and created 55 new jobs in 11-Pacific Islands countries.
