IFFHS is an organisation recognised by FIFA that chronicles the history and records of association football.
Each team earns points from their national leagues, as well as the club competitions held by the continental confederations and FIFA.
The yearly points scored by clubs in the Club World Rankings are added from 2001 to 2010, yielding the continental club ranking. The first-placed club is that continent’s top club for the first decade. The top clubs can thus be determined the same way for each of the six football continents.
Late in 2005, Football Federation Australia left OFC with FIFA’s approval and joined the Asian Football Confederation. Since clubs must be affiliated with their respective confederation, only those points earned by Australian clubs during the period of 2001-2005 are considered for the Oceania club rankings.
Therefore, depending on the period, Australian clubs may appear in either the Oceania or the Asian continental club rankings.
Since Australian clubs no longer earned any points in Oceania after January 1, 2006, their Oceania rankings dropped accordingly. Auckland City is therefore Oceania’s club of the first decade of the 21st century, having gained the most points over the entire decade.
Auckland gathered many points from, above all, its participation in the OFC Champions League and remained clear ahead of Ba (Fiji) and Perth Glory (Australia). The fourth-placed club is Waitakere United of New Zealand, ahead of Pirae (Tahiti), Sydney Olympic (Australia) and Lautoka (Fiji). During the period 2001-2010, 36 clubs each achieved more than a hundred points.
Auckland City will be honoured as Oceania’s club of the decade at the World Football Gala 2011 with a certificate and a trophy.
The other confederation winners announced by IFFHS were:
Asia (AFC): Al-Hilal (Saudi Arabia)
Africa (CAF): Al-Ahly (Egypt)
Europe (UEFA): Barcelona (Spain)
Central and North America (CONCACAF): Club America (Mexico)
South America (CONMEBOL): Boca Juniors (Argentina)
Overall World Club of the First Decade: Barcelona (Spain)
