A statement by West Ham United confirmed the one-time Liverpool frontman will miss both of his club’s matches on their short New Zealand tour.
“Andy Carroll will miss both games on the Football United tour of New Zealand as a precautionary measure after developing a sore left ankle during training.
“After assessment by the club’s medical experts, it was decided to let the England international rest for both remaining games and receive intensive treatment to ensure he is fit for the start of the season.
“It should be clear that the affected area is not in any way associated with the previous injury he successfully overcame towards the end of last season.”
West Ham’s English counterparts, Newcastle United, started their Football United tour with a 4-0 thrashing of Sydney FC in Dunedin.
The East London outfit play the Wellington Phoenix in Auckland tonight at Eden Park then Sydney FC in Wellington on Saturday.
Wellington Phoenix take on Newcastle United as part of that double-header weekend at Westpac Stadium.
Current Fiji international striker, Roy Krishna, is in line to become the first player from his country to face English Premier League opposition.
