Suwamy struck in the second half of the final against defending champions Navua at Churchill Park in Lautoka on Sunday.
The beaten side had their sights set on a third consecutive title but Ba had clearly not read the script and dominated proceedings from the opening whistle.
They found Navua goalkeeper Benaminio Mateinaqara in inspired form though and could not find a way through before the half-time break.
But it didn’t take long after the restart for Ba to grab the title-winning goal. Suwamy took advantage of a defensive lapse to finally get the ball past Mateinaqara in the 49th minute.
Navua fought their way back into the game and pressed hard for an equaliser but Ba held on to become champions.
Head coach Farouk Janeman says the win proved a point for his side.
“We were written off by many but we fought back to win the title. Ba is a side that can never be written off at any time and I think with the pattern we displayed today we showed what football is all about.”
Opposing coach Gurjit Singh is keen to consign the loss to history and says Navua will now look to concentrate on their preparations for the upcoming Fiji Sun Weet-Bix National Football League.
“I think my boys were really fatigued,” Singh says. “We did not have enough rest and that is why we could not cope with Ba. Now we want to focus on the national league and prepare for the other tournaments.”
Ba picked up a cheque for $15,000 for the win while Navua received $4000.
Ba midfielder Malakai Tiwa had his efforts rewarded by being named player of the tournament.
The final showdown between the two sides was set up after Ba defeated Labasa 1-0 and Navua knocked out hosts Lautoka 2-1 in the semi-finals.
Navua had earlier enjoyed a 1-0 win over Ba on day two of the tournament, thanks to a goal from US-based striker Stefan Clemens, but could not repeat the feat in the final.
