The 2014 OFC Champions League runners-up were made to work hard for their win, with Erakor Golden Star chasing an historic title of their own, and new coach Marco Bancini says it was a well deserved victory in the end.
“It is very hot here in Port Vila and the playing surface is not good but Nasali was so good at the back and he scored the most beautiful goal that gave my team the victory,” Bancini says.
“I congratulated every player for working so hard in this final. This is a good start for my players and we have to keep working hard before the season starts next week.”
Things could have been different had Erakor been able to finish some of the chances they had. Jack Niko came closest with his first half effort which flew just inches over the cross bar, much to his disappointment.
Amicale also had some chances of their own late in the match but both Osea Vaketalesau and Francois Sakama sent their shots off-target.
The clincher came just five minutes from time as Nasali leapt high to head home a Fenedy Masauvakalo corner.
Bancini says while his side has started the season on a high, there remains plenty to work for.
“We must continue because the season doesn’t end here today. We’re only halfway through the current campaign and we will work hard for 2015 to be as successful.
“It’s a good time for me in my career, I’m happy to have come to this club and to win my first final is great but now we have to start thinking about tomorrow’s tournament.”
While the domestic league is set to get underway soon, Bancini says the main focus will be the 2015 OFC Champions League in April.
“We have to prepare well because our group in the Champions League will be very tough.”
