Lautoka striker Jone Vono Junior was named 2008 Player of the Year at the Fiji Football Association Air Pacific annual awards night in Suva on Saturday while Roy Krishna picked up the Popular Footballer of the Year Award.

Many had tipped the New Zealand-based Krishna to win the overall award after his efforts with Waitakere United including a brace on Saturday against Team Wellington in the New Zealand Football Championship Playoffs.

Krishna was also the first Fijian player to appear at the finals of a FIFA event when he played for O-League champions Waitakere at the FIFA Club World Cup in Japan.

But Vono took out the top award after consistent performances in Fiji’s domestic league. He was skipper of the Lautoka side that won the Inter District Championships last year.

In other categories, Lautoka mentor Dennis Singh won Coach of the Year, Tailevu Naitasiri’s Kunal Swarup was named the Junior Footballer of the Year and Asena Ratu of Tavua was the women’s Player of the Year.

The fair play award went to Lemeki Nakavu of Tailevu Naitasiri and Finau Vulivuli was Referee of the Year.

Premier Administrator of the Year was won by Tailevu Naita-siri’s Sandeep Roy (Premier) and Nadi’s Jeetendra Kumar won the Super Premier award.
