It is 16 years since the New Zealand senior women’s team made their one and only appearance at the World Cup finals. This year’s squad has a golden opportunity to qualify for the 2007 FIFA Women’s World Cup in China.

First they have to get through the Oceania World Cup qualifying tournament in Papua New Guinea in April where they are likely to be up against Samoa and Tonga as well as the host nation.

While New Zealand will be odds on to win against the island nations and book their spot at the World Cup in China in September, new coach Allan Jones, who took over the role at the end of last year, is taking nothing for granted.
