Clapham’s Player-of-the-Year form in a breakthrough 2009/10 season earned the midfielder a call up to New Zealand’s FIFA World Cup squad and helped fire the Dragons to a place in the league’s grand final.
“I think we can do well again,” he says. “We’ve got the bulk of the squad from last year and if we can make the playoffs then anything can happen, as it did last year.”
The 23-year-old is expected to be confirmed in the All Whites squad, named today, for the ASB International Series which features matches against Honduras on October 9 at North Harbour Stadium and Paraguay in Wellington on October 12.
“Staying in the All Whites frame is definitely my goal this season and playing well for Canterbury in the ASB Premiership can only help,” he says.
Canterbury United chairman Craig Rhodes says the signing came as a consequence of the strong partnership between Mainland Football and Canterbury United.

“Aaron had a stellar season last year and deserved the accolades that came his way. We are delighted he has chosen to stay at Canterbury United for the next ASB Premiership campaign. This is a huge confidence boost for the Canterbury football community.”
Canterbury coach Keith Braithwaite is delighted Clapham has committed himself to the club again.
“It is great for the team and great for the province as we look to build on the improved effort last year. We have lost a fair bit of experience from last year’s squad so having Aaron available for another campaign is a big bonus.”
The ASB Premiership kicks off on October 16 when Waikato FC take on Auckland City at Fred Jones Park in Hamilton.
Canterbury United’s first game is away to Team Wellington on November 7 and they open their home account at Linfield Park against YoungHeart Manawatu a week later.
