Wood picked up a knock during training two weeks ago which ruled him out of City’s last two fixtures against Peterborough United and Huddersfield Town.
Hopeful of being fit for the Charlton fixture, Wood said while being injured isn’t ideal it is an unavoidable part of the game.
“I think it’s always going to be tough when you come back from an injury, but it’s just one of those things that you have to deal with. All footballers go through it,” Wood said.
“Every footballer likes to play, they hate being injured, but that’s the way it goes sometimes. I’ll go back out there once I’m fit, hopefully do my job and link up with whoever is up front with me, and we can do what we normally do and keep the goals coming.”
And keep the goals coming he did.
Shortly before the hour mark after being played in, Wood calmly finished – only for the flag to be raised for offside. He got another powerful shot off with 25 minutes to go, but the ball was deflected off Charlton defender Leon Cort.
In the end, City’s continuous pressure on the Charlton defence paid off with Wood helping his side equalise with an instinctive shot from 15 yards out finding its way past keeper Ben Hamer.
The goal took Wood’s tally to eight in seven games since his January signing with Leicester and coach Nigel Pearson was full of praise for the young striker despite the loss.
“I think his record speaks for itself. He’s had two or three weeks out and he was still able to have an impact tonight,” Pearson said.
“Charlton limited the opportunities for our strikers by making it difficult, especially in the first half, and they spent a lot of time playing out wide trying to create space, but he took his goal exceptionally well.
“It’s important to remember that he is a young lad, he’s not exactly late 20s with hundreds of appearances. He’s learning the game, he’s had a great impact and he’s a great lad to work with. He’ll continue to score goals, there’s no doubt about that.”
