Vanuatu will welcome New Caledonia for an international friendly on Saturday at Port Vila Stadium with the match scheduled for kick-off at 3pm.
The OFC Nations Cup in 2012 is the last time these two nations met and on that occasion it was Les Cagous who came out triumphant with a 5-2 victory at Lawson Tama Stadium.
Les Cagous coach Thierry Sardo is well aware of the fact that his side hasn’t played an international match of any nature for a considerable amount of time.
“The New Caledonia national team hasn’t played any official matches for a long time, and this is a good time to return to a certain level of international matches,” he says.
With a number of injuries and availability issues Sardo has had to rethink his original line-up for the friendly but there remains a large amount of experience in the squad, as well as some newer names in Nathanaël Hmaen and Morgan Mathelon among others.
Meanwhile in Vanuatu preparations have been underway for the past three weeks for this match as Moise Poida looks to identify the side he believes can take the ultimate prize – Oceania’s sole berth at the FIFA Confederations Cup.
“I want to thank all the football clubs in Port Vila who have supported the squad since we started our trainings and I want to encourage all the faithful football fans to come and support Vanuatu this Saturday at Port Vila Stadium,” Poida says.
